Now, a new report from Digitimes suggests that Samsung has accelerated the supply of the equipment needed to achieve its goal by several years. This is based on a notice that Samsung Electronics is sending to suppliers, saying that the company will prioritize equipment with a high level of automation.
AI technology helps Samsung accelerate chip manufacturing automation
At the silicon wafer processing stage, the level of automation at Samsung enterprises has exceeded 90%, but subsequent operations related to chip packaging and testing have only reached 20-30% automation. This is due to the combination of operations that are not the most convenient for automation. Samsung's ultimate goal in this area is to increase automation to 100%.
If equipment suppliers actively participate in increasing automation, experts predict that Samsung's 100% goal can be achieved by 2026. One of the main reasons for this earlier-than-expected goal stems from artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
In addition, the lack of qualified experts has also forced Samsung to accelerate the implementation of automation solutions in chip production. Since June 2023, Samsung has been using fully automated chip production lines at two of its factories. In addition to reducing 90% of production process downtime, automation has also helped the Korean company reduce its human resource needs by 85%.
