According to a survey recently published by SellCell, although artificial intelligence has become the focus of the mobile technology industry in recent years, smartphone users do not really care about these features on their devices. The survey of more than 2,000 smartphone users in the US, including about 1,000 iPhone users and over 1,000 Samsung Galaxy phone users, showed that the majority do not appreciate the value of AI features developed by two major companies, Apple and Samsung.
Specifically, up to 73% of iPhone users and 87% of Samsung phone users said that the AI features on their devices do not bring much value to the user experience. Only about 15.4% of iPhone users commented that Apple Intelligence is superior to Samsung's AI, while only 7.8% of Samsung Galaxy users commented that Galaxy AI is superior to Apple's AI feature.
Apple Intelligence on iPhone is said to be useless
However, despite not being completely satisfied with the AI features available, nearly half of iPhone users (47%) still said that AI was an important factor when deciding to buy a new smartphone. This number is significantly lower for Samsung users, with only 23.7% saying that artificial intelligence was a factor worth considering when choosing a phone.
When it comes to paying for advanced AI features on their phones, most users of both brands are reluctant, with 86.5% of iPhone users and 94.5% of Samsung users saying they would not pay for additional AI services if asked.
The survey also revealed some of the AI features that are most popular among users of the two brands. For iPhone users, the most used feature is Writing Tools, with a usage rate of up to 72%. Other popular features include Photo Assist, a tool to clean up photos or remove unwanted objects, which 29.1% of users have tried; Notification Smart Reply (smart reply) at 20.9%; Smart Reply (suggested quick message responses) at 44.5%.
Meanwhile, Samsung Galaxy users mostly love Circle to Search, a smart search feature when locating objects in photos, with 82.1% having experienced it. Next is the photo support feature (Photo Assist) with 55.5%, along with some tools such as Chat Assist (smart messaging assistant, 28.8%) or Note Assist (quick note support, 28.8%).
“Circle to search” is one of the most used features on Samsung’s Galaxy AI
Explaining their lack of interest in AI, the majority of iPhone users (57.6%) said they have not updated to the latest software version, while 36.7% commented that the AI feature on the iPhone is not really useful and 18.2% said that the accuracy is not high. Up to 44.2% of Samsung users rated the AI feature as not useful, 35.5% commented that AI lacked accuracy and more than 30% of the remaining users had concerns about privacy when using it.
The survey also shows that smartphone users' brand loyalty is decreasing. Specifically, the iPhone loyalty rate dropped from 92% in 2021 to 78.9% today. Samsung also faced a similar situation, dropping to 67.2%, significantly lower than previous years (74% in 2021).
The survey results reflect the reality that although artificial intelligence is a mainstream trend in smartphone development, users have yet to feel the clear benefits of this technology on current devices. This poses a problem for big companies like Apple and Samsung in how to develop more practical AI features that are closer and bring clear value to users, instead of just racing to follow technology trends.
