The University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City (UMC Hospital) has recently implemented an advanced technique in the field of cardiology – endocardial biopsy. This method helps to detect myocardial diseases early and accurately, and plays a crucial role in monitoring patients after heart transplantation.
According to Dr. Vu Hoang Vu, Head of the Interventional Cardiology Department at the University Medical Center, endocardial biopsy is a particularly useful tool in determining the cause of unexplained heart failure, as well as assessing the extent of myocardial damage in complex diseases. Taking a small tissue sample from the heart helps doctors not only make an accurate diagnosis but also develop a more appropriate treatment plan for each specific case.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh, from the Interventional Cardiology Department of the University Medical Center Hospital, stated that this technique is particularly important in monitoring patients after heart transplantation. By directly collecting tissue samples from the heart, doctors can detect early signs of rejection, thereby adjusting treatment protocols promptly to protect the transplanted heart's function. Furthermore, endocardial biopsy helps identify rare heart conditions such as giant cell myocarditis or amyloidosis – conditions that are difficult to detect using conventional imaging methods.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh - Department of Interventional Cardiology - University Medical Center Hospital, performs endocardial biopsy technique.
The endocardial biopsy procedure is meticulously prepared, ensuring absolute safety for the patient. Doctors will access the heart chambers intravenously, using a specialized instrument to obtain a small tissue sample from the myocardium under the guidance of modern imaging equipment. The entire procedure is performed in a cardiac catheterization lab, with seamless coordination between the specialist, nurses, and technicians.
It brings many important benefits.
Despite being an invasive technique, endocardial biopsy offers significant benefits in clinical practice. At the University Medical Center, this procedure is performed under strict control, from indication assessment to post-procedure monitoring. This helps minimize potential complications such as bleeding, arrhythmias, or valvular damage.
According to Dr. Au Thanh Tung, Head of the General Planning Department, the application of endocardial biopsy has opened up many new opportunities in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. For patients after heart transplantation, this technique helps detect early signs of rejection, thereby allowing for timely intervention. In cases of heart failure of unknown cause, taking myocardial tissue samples allows doctors to accurately determine the nature of the damage, helping to personalize treatment plans and optimize outcomes.
Beyond being just a diagnostic method, endocardial biopsy represents a significant advancement in interventional cardiology. With its clear practical applications, it promises to offer long-term benefits to patients and improve the quality of cardiovascular healthcare in Vietnam.
