The marriage connection club "One Bailey" founded by residents of the luxury apartment complex Raemian One Bailey is expanding its membership to other high-end areas, with the aim of connecting elite individuals in the Gangnam, Seocho and Banpo areas of Seoul, South Korea.

Real life version of marital ambition

Recent, Korea Economic Daily Citing sources from the Korean real estate industry, the marriage connection club "One Bailey" (Wonkyulhoi for short), which was originally only for internal residents of the luxury apartment complex Raemian One Bailey (Banpo, Seoul), has officially announced the expansion of its scope of operations.

According to an announcement posted on a resident forum on February 19, Wonkyulhoi will become the Banpo area's representative marriage connection club and welcome new members from Gangnam, Seocho, and Banpo.

Wonkyulhoi representative said, there was a misunderstanding before that only Raemian One Bailey residents were allowed to participate.

In fact, Wonkyulhoi has two main target groups: Residents who are introduced by apartment owners and those who live in Seocho, Gangnam, Banpo who wish to participate after being approved. In addition, those who do not fall into the above cases can still apply and wait for approval from Wonkyulhoi.

With a membership of 350, Wonkyulhoi requires a membership fee of 100,000 won and an annual fee of 300,000 won. When it was first established, it was open only to residents, children of residents, and family members living at Raemian One Bailey. Events included parent-child meetings and group dates for children.

“These parents came up with the idea of neighbourly matchmaking, believing that they had similar backgrounds – such as income and education – and therefore their children had a higher chance of meeting ideal partners from the same social class,” a source said.

The The Korea Times reported that the project, which is scheduled to be built in the summer of 2023, is currently one of the most expensive apartment complexes in the country. An 84-square-meter apartment here will sell for 4.4 billion won (about 82 billion VND) in April 2024, up from 3.8 billion won in January 2024.

However, that is not the highest price for an apartment here. According to data from the Real Estate Transaction Disclosure System of the Ministry of National Defense and Transport of Korea, a 133 square meter apartment was traded for a record 10.6 billion won.

This affirms the position of "100 billion VND house" of Raemian One Bailey, attracting the attention of those who wish to find a partner with suitable economic conditions.

"One Bailey" reminds many people of the movie Remarriage And Desires (Remarriage Ambition) is a famous Korean drama released on Netflix in 2022. The film revolves around the Korean upper class.

Remarriage And Desires is set at the exclusive Rex matchmaking agency that caters to the highest echelons of society and those who desire to marry into the upper class, as well as those who wish to upgrade or maintain their status at the top through marriage.

Marriages "under the same sky" among the rich in Korea

At One Bailey, the main target was initially only residents living in Raemian One Bailey. However, up to now, the target has been expanded to people living in other high-end areas such as Seocho, Gangnam, Banpo.

This further confirms their view that "People with similar backgrounds - such as income and education - will meet ideal partners from the same social class."

In fact, arranged marriages in Korea are no longer strange to the public. Especially among the upper class. Marriages among the rich are no longer strange in Korea. Children of these families build their own social circle, marrying each other for business purposes.

The Korean public has three classic statements: “Chaebols must marry politicians”, “chaebols must marry celebrities” and “chaebols must marry chaebols”.

Currently, the issue of "equal social status" and income inequality between households in Korea is on the decline. However, will this view disappear among the upper class and rich in Korea?

Right from the first generation of the wealthy, upper-class parents have been extremely concerned with narrowing the range of marriage partners for their children. The statement that “chaebols must marry chaebols” is completely correct. Korea has academies and clubs reserved for the children of the upper class. Children of these families build their own social circles, marrying each other for business purposes.

According to statistics in 2017, the ratio of “chaebol marrying chaebol” in the second generation of chaebols was 46.3%. In the third generation of chaebols, it continued to increase. According to the report in 2020, this number was 50.7% (an increase of 4.4%). In other words, over 50% of chaebol children married chaebol children.
