Birth weight of newborn baby is related to IQ

Báo Gia đình Việt NamBáo Gia đình Việt Nam22/03/2025

Many studies have shown a link between weight and children's IQ, children who reach the standard weight tend to be healthier and smarter.

A child's weight is considered an important criterion for assessing growth and development. Most mothers want their children to be a little heavy, chubby, and healthy when they are born. However, the weight of a newborn baby is not always the heavier the better. Whether it is too heavy or too light, it is related to the health status and IQ of the child.

The link between birth weight and brain development

Studies have shown that about 70% of the human brain is completed during the fetal and infant stages. The brain, although small, develops rapidly in the early stages of life and can be assessed by a child's weight to determine whether or not he or she is intelligent.

The brain capacity of a newborn baby is only 1/4 of that of an adult. By the age of 3, the brain capacity can reach 3/4 of that of an adult. Therefore, this stage is the golden stage for the development of a child's brain.

A British study conducted a long-term follow-up assessment of more than 3,900 babies of different birth weights. According to the study results, it was found that a baby's weight is related to intelligence level.

If a pregnant woman is malnourished during pregnancy, her baby may be born underweight, which causes nutritional deficiencies and can affect brain development.

The brain develops the fastest in the fetal and neonatal stages, and its nutritional needs are very high. If the nutritional supply is insufficient, it can lead to a decrease in the number of brain cells, smaller size, affecting the structure and function of the brain.

On the contrary, if pregnant women are overnourished, their newborns may be overweight and face greater risks during childbirth such as difficult births and birth injuries. These risks can lead to brain damage such as lack of oxygen and bleeding, affecting later brain development.

What is the best weight for a newborn baby?

Stanford University conducted a research report in which professors stated that the weight of newborn babies is closely related to brain development.

According to medical reports, the ideal weight of a newborn baby is about 3.25kg. The closer the weight is to this number, the better the child's ability to develop intelligence, the more optimal brain development, and when they reach school age, they will have the ability to absorb knowledge faster.

Similarly, Harvard Medical School also conducted further research on this. Scientists performed a series of intelligence tests on children with different baseline weights. The results showed that the closer the weight of the newborn baby is to the number 3.2 - 3.5 kg, the smarter and the highest IQ.

According to a study in Denmark, if a child weighs between 3kg and 3.5kg, they are considered the healthiest and most intelligent. Meanwhile, children weighing less than 2.5kg are considered underweight, which makes them have poor immunity and are susceptible to minor illnesses.

In addition to weight, doctors also continue to pay attention to other indicators such as the length and circumference of the child's head. These factors also play an important role in comprehensive development, thereby providing suggestions about the child's future intellectual development potential. To help children develop comprehensively in terms of health and brain, parents should pay attention to the method of nutrition, living environment,...

Thus, there is a certain correlation between birth weight and a child's IQ, but birth weight alone cannot accurately predict IQ. Assessing a child's IQ requires comprehensive consideration of many factors such as genetics, environment, through professional psychological tests....
