Impressive start

The 9th Mekong Delta Sports Festival has completed 4 events: women's beach volleyball, kickboxing, boxing, and taekwondo. Most of the matches were quite intense, with the winner and loser only being decided in the final minutes. Despite injuries, sweat, and blood, athletes always had the spirit of effort and determination to compete and strive to achieve good results.

Hau Giang kickboxer Nguyen Xuan Tung shared: “Injury is a common thing in sports, especially in competitive sports. Although it is hard, with the passion for sports, I always give my all in every match, maintain physical stability, and choose the right time to gain an advantage over my opponent.”

It is the careful preparation, long-term planning, and thorough resources that have helped the coaching staff see correctly and promote existing strengths, bringing about quite impressive results in the two sports of kickboxing and boxing. Thanks to that, Hau Giang Sports is temporarily ranked second in the overall delegation in the delta region with 13 gold medals (HCV), 8 silver medals (HCB) and 31 bronze medals (HCĐ). A pretty good start, helping the provincial sports have the opportunity to compete and most likely exceed the set goals in the next stage.

At this congress, Hau Giang delegation strives to achieve 22 gold medals, 27 silver medals and 27 bronze medals or more, ranking 9th out of 13 provinces and cities in the region. Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Hung, Director of the Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center, said: "Provinces and cities in the region have long-term and systematic preparations for the congress, so the competition for achievements is quite large. Just one minute of negligence or inappropriate tactics will easily lead to defeat. With a good start in terms of the number of medals, we expect coaches and athletes to continue to compete with all their might, maintain and maintain their position and reap many new achievements."

As the host, Hau Giang is the venue for 8 events in the competition program of the congress and has now completed hosting the first 2 events, kickboxing and boxing. In general, the facilities, professional work, logistics, information, security and order, and health care for athletes are carefully prepared, safe, economical and meet the set goals. In mid-August, Hau Giang continued to organize competitions in 4 sports: judo and kurash at Nga Bay City Basketball Stadium, cross-country and tennis in Vi Thanh City.

Fierce in the rest

The 2023 Mekong Delta Sports Festival will feature 27 events, taking place from July to October 2023. August will be a fierce period when 16/27 events will be held consecutively in provinces and cities in the region, certainly bringing impressive spiritual feasts to sports fans.

Hau Giang Sports participates in the congress with 19 events, of which 12 events will be competed in this period, so this is considered a key period to create a gap and a breakthrough on the overall achievement table. Judo, athletics, cross-country, traditional martial arts, etc. are expected to bring many gold medals to the provincial sports delegation. Mr. Diep Thanh Phong, Hau Giang athletics coach, shared: "Athletics will compete from August 21 to 25 in An Giang. With relatively guaranteed resources, training and practice over the past months, and about 20 athletes competing, we expect to be in the top 3 of the entire delegation."

Mr. Huynh Thanh Tai, Head of the provincial judo-jujitsu department, informed: "The team continues to practice, maintain a stable physical foundation, and practice more technical and tactical skills during this period because from now until the day there will not be many judo competitions. In judo, we set a goal of winning 3 gold medals, in which we strive to promote the strength of the content of the form". In addition, the department also tries to balance resources to ensure, when competing in 3 events this month, including judo from August 16 to 22, jujitsu from August 22 to 28, and kurash from August 26 to 31.

In the sports arena of the delta region, Hau Giang is still in the bottom group, while all the remaining provinces and cities have made careful preparations and are looking for opportunities to rise above. But Hau Giang sports has never had as many conditions and advantages as it does now. The important thing is how the professional sector will make efforts and take advantage of each opportunity to achieve the best results. This is not only an opportunity to affirm the regional position but also helps to test and evaluate the capacity and level of the province's sports in order to have a development orientation, cultivate efficiency, and achieve better quality in the future. It is expected that Hau Giang athletes will have a stable mentality and steady tactics to write a new record for provincial sports at a delta congress.

At the 8th Mekong Delta Sports Festival in 2020, Hau Giang delegation ranked 11th out of 14 participating delegations, bringing home 15 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 22 bronze medals.
