National Assembly dismisses President Vo Van Thuong

The National Assembly unanimously dismissed Mr. Vo Van Thuong from the position of President for the 2021-2026 term and from his duties as a deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

On the morning of March 21, the 15th National Assembly convened the 6th extraordinary session to consider and decide on personnel work under the authority of the National Assembly.

With the majority of National Assembly deputies voting in favor, the National Assembly passed a resolution on the dismissal of the President for the 2021-2026 term and the removal of Mr. Vo Van Thuong from the position of deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

Previously, Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man, on behalf of the National Assembly Standing Committee, submitted to the National Assembly for consideration the dismissal of Mr. Vo Van Thuong from the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 term and the termination of his duties as a deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

According to the report, the basis for the National Assembly Standing Committee to submit to the National Assembly the dismissal of Mr. Vo Van Thuong from the position of President and the termination of his position as a National Assembly deputy is Resolution No. 48 dated March 20 at the extraordinary meeting of the 13th Party Central Committee; and the notification of the Politburo's opinion in Official Dispatch No. 9435 dated March 18 of the Party Central Committee Office.

Along with that is the application dated March 19 to resign from the position of President, related positions and to cease performing the duties of a delegate of the 15th National Assembly of Mr. Vo Van Thuong.

After listening to the report, the National Assembly discussed it in groups. Then, the National Assembly held a secret ballot to decide on the dismissal of Mr. Vo Van Thuong from the position of President for the 2021-2026 term and the removal of him from the position of deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

On March 20, the 13th Party Central Committee met to consider and give opinions on the wish to resign from his positions and retire from work of Mr. Vo Van Thuong, Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 term.

According to the Party Central Committee, Mr. Vo Van Thuong is a key leader of the Party and State, receiving basic training, growing from the grassroots, and assigned to hold many important leadership positions of the Party and State.

However, according to the recent report of the Central Inspection Committee and the authorities, Mr. Vo Van Thuong violated the Regulations on what party members are not allowed to do, the Regulations on the exemplary responsibility of cadres and party members, first of all, members of the Politburo, members of the Secretariat, members of the Central Executive Committee of the Party and is responsible as a leader according to the regulations of the Party and the laws of the State.

Mr. Vo Van Thuong's violations and shortcomings have caused negative public opinion, affecting the reputation of the Party, the State and the individual. Fully aware of his responsibility to the Party, the State and the People, Mr. Vo Van Thuong has submitted a request to resign from his assigned positions and retire from work.

Pursuant to current regulations of the Party and State and considering the wishes of Mr. Vo Van Thuong, the Party Central Committee agreed to let Mr. Vo Van Thuong cease to hold the positions of Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 term.

Mr. Vo Van Thuong was born on December 13, 1970, in An Phuoc commune, Mang Thit district, Vinh Long province. He has a Master's degree in Philosophy; Advanced degree in political theory.

Mr. Vo Van Thuong is a member of the Politburo, 12th and 13th tenures; Secretary of the Party Central Committee, 12th and 13th tenures; Member of the Party Central Committee, 10th (alternate), 11th, 12th and 13th tenures; National Assembly delegate, 12th, 14th and 15th tenures.

On March 2, 2023, at the 4th Extraordinary Session, the 15th National Assembly elected Mr. Vo Van Thuong to hold the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
