Vietnam and Russia, two countries far apart geographically but always close emotionally. The close friendship over the past 75 years is entering a period of strong development, adapting to the times, opening up many opportunities for strategic cooperation in all fields.
In an interview with a VNA reporter, senior expert from the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies RISI Maria Zelenkova said: Friendship, understanding and mutual assistance are the three historical foundations of the relations between Russia and Vietnam. Those foundations have always been maintained and have not lost their significance for both sides for decades and under any internal and external conditions.
According to Ms. Zelenkova, in the context of the current changing world order, the rise of new power centers and economic growth, both Moscow and Hanoi affirmed their interest in developing bilateral cooperation, while acknowledging opportunities in traditional areas of cooperation, as well as significant new cooperation potential.

The current geopolitical context not only cannot limit Russia-Vietnam relations, but also creates an impetus for the two countries to look at cooperation in a new way and adapt to changes, especially in the digital, scientific and technological direction. In particular, a trustworthy dialogue at the highest level plays an important role, helping the leaders of the two countries to openly discuss international political issues as well as bilateral agendas.
Looking back at the high-level visits between the two countries in 2024 and early 2025, Ms. Zelenkova said that these contacts were not only aimed at maintaining a trustworthy dialogue at the level of the two countries' leaders, but also helped clarify and confirm agreements that will be implemented by the parties in the coming years. This concerns many areas of Russian-Vietnamese cooperation, from energy, including nuclear energy, trade to science, education and banking.
From Ms. Zelenkova's perspective, Russia considers Vietnam one of its most friendly countries and reliable partners, and that is Russia's consistent view. This is partly because the Vietnamese leadership considers Russia one of the most important directions in the country's foreign policy and strives to develop relations between the two countries.
Ms. Zelenkova affirmed that Vietnam is one of Russia’s priority partners in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, Vietnam is assigned the role of a “bridge” in the context of Russia’s relations with ASEAN countries, while Russia itself is in a similar position in the context of Vietnam’s interaction with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Speaking at the ceremony to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation organized by the Russia-Vietnam Friendship Association in Moscow, Deputy Director of the Department of Asia 3 of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vadym Bublikov said that perhaps in the world there are few two countries or two peoples that, despite being far apart geographically, different in culture, language, religion..., are as close as Vietnam and Russia. He recalled the tradition of cooperation that was forged during the difficult period, when the Soviet Union provided great support to Vietnam in its struggle for independence.
In the modern era, despite facing many challenges, the two countries continue to strive to strengthen relations in many areas, especially in economic, trade and educational cooperation. Every year, hundreds of Vietnamese students receive scholarships to study at leading Russian universities, contributing to the high-quality human resources for Vietnam.
At the conference celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Russia diplomatic relations held in Saint Petersburg on January 22, Governor of the city Alexander Beglov affirmed: Vietnam and the Russian Federation have always been together throughout the 75-year journey of building and developing relations, supporting each other to achieve victories together.
According to Mr. Beglov, Saint Petersburg - the first place Uncle Ho set foot in when he came to Russia - has always been at the forefront of economic, cultural and social cooperation, both in breadth and depth. More and more localities in Vietnam have established sister city relations with this city.
Governor Beglov believes that cooperation between the Russian Federation and Vietnam is waiting for special prospects, ambitious projects and further expansion of cultural, humanitarian and youth cooperation.
