On November 24, Mr. Mike Waltz, who is being nominated by US President-elect Donald Trump for the position of National Security Advisor, told Fox News : "We need to bring this to a responsible end. We need to restore deterrence, restore peace and get ahead of this escalation instead of reacting to it."
The statement was made in the context that on November 17, the administration of US President Joe Biden removed restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons provided by Washington to strike deep into Russian territory.
Soon after, Moscow formally approved a revised nuclear doctrine, reserving the right to consider a nuclear response to a conventional weapons attack that violates Russia's sovereignty.
During this time, Ukraine launched its first attack with long-range ATACMS missiles on Russia's western Bryansk province.
On November 21, Russia confirmed that it had fired its latest Oreshnik hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile with a non-nuclear warhead at a Ukrainian defense industrial facility in the Dnieper.
All of these successive developments have escalated the conflict in Ukraine to a dangerous level, with the risk of a nuclear conflict breaking out.
In light of these new developments, on November 24, TASS news agency reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden is trying to escalate the situation in Ukraine to prevent any efforts to resolve the conflict by his successor, Donald Trump.
"Trump said during his campaign that he would somehow ensure peace and put everyone on the path to peace. So what the Biden administration is trying to do is escalate the situation to the point where those peace terms will inevitably fail first," the Kremlin official said.
Assessing the future of Mr. Trump's US presidency, spokesman Peskov said that Russia has no illusions: " You and I do not wear rose-colored glasses and we still have to wait and see whether Mr. Trump will continue this policy (escalation) or change it."
US President-elect Donald Trump is expected to be sworn in as president on January 20, 2025.
