According to RIA news agency, on March 10, at a meeting between Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi, the two sides reached an agreement to merge all civil and military structures in the Northeast into state agencies, including control of border crossings, airports, as well as oil and gas fields.

In addition, the two sides also reached a ceasefire agreement in Syria, emphasizing that the agreement is an affirmation that the Kurdish community is an inseparable part of Syria, with civil rights stipulated in the country's Constitution.

Before the latest move, on the evening of March 11 (local time), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington welcomed the agreement between the US-backed Kurdish forces and the new government in Syria.

Similarly, Arab countries described this as an important step towards enhancing security in Syria.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the Saudi Foreign Ministry praised the signing of the agreement and appreciated the measures taken by the Syrian leadership to “maintain civil peace” in the country. Riyadh reiterated its full support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.

"This agreement is an important step towards strengthening civil peace, enhancing security and stability, and building a state of institutions and rule of law," the Qatari foreign ministry said.

Meanwhile, Kuwait stressed the importance of the agreement in rebuilding Syrian state institutions and enhancing security and stability in the country.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry called this “an important step towards rebuilding Syria on the basis of ensuring unity, sovereignty and stability, protecting security, eliminating terrorism and protecting the rights of all brotherly Syrians.”

On the United Nations (UN) side, at a press conference on March 11, Mr. Stephane Dujarric - spokesman for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres - said: "We welcome the new agreement signed between the leaders of the Syrian interim government and the SDF on March 10."

Meanwhile, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen expressed hope that this agreement will support and promote a more inclusive and credible political transition in Syria, in line with the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, towards the building of a new Constitution as well as free and fair elections.

Mr. Pedersen called on the United States, Türkiye and regional partners to increase support for Syria, including promoting a nationwide ceasefire and seeking substantive compromises to ensure lasting peace and stability in northeastern Syria.
