"Kind Farmers" Movement in Da Huoai

In recent times, the emulation movement for good production and business has continued to be promoted by all levels of the Farmers' Association in Da Huoai district; in which, farmers pay special attention to changing their mindset, way of thinking, and way of doing agricultural production towards standards of safety for health and sustainability for the environment.

Many green-skinned grapefruit growers in Quang Ngai commune, Da Huoai district produce according to clean and safe criteria for consumers.

Faced with the increasing demand for safe and clean food, many farmers in Da Huoai district have proactively changed their old production mindset, invested hard, and applied advanced production processes to create clean agricultural products. Visiting Mr. Nguyen Tuc's green-skinned grapefruit garden of more than 2 hectares (Hamlet 1, Quang Ngai commune), the highlight in Mr. Tuc's grapefruit cultivation process is the good application of technical advances in production, limiting the use of fertilizers and chemical pesticides, prioritizing the use of organic fertilizers and microbiological fertilizers. In addition, he also invested in an automatic irrigation and fertilization system to save on labor costs. Thanks to that, Mr. Tuc's green-skinned grapefruit garden's output always reaches over 100 tons of fruit/year; at the same time, grapefruit is also purchased by traders at a stable price of over 20,000 VND/kg.

Not far away, the 3.8-hectare grapefruit garden in Village 2, Quang Ngai Commune of Mr. Nguyen Lai Lam is also being invested in by farmers to apply many scientific and technical advances; focusing on clean and safe production to meet the increasing demand of consumers. According to Mr. Lam, most people still abuse chemical fertilizers and pesticides, leading to low product quality. To find a new direction in cultivating green-skin grapefruit, he chose to grow organically, using biological products, both ensuring the health of growers and users, and protecting the land and living environment. In addition, during the cultivation process, he also prioritizes choosing manure and organic fertilizers of all kinds to fertilize the plants. For fungi, pests, and aphids on the plants, he chooses biological drugs to spray and wash. In particular, when the grapefruit enters the harvest stage, Mr. Lam strictly adheres to the quarantine period for the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and diseases so that agricultural products do not contain toxic residues that affect the health of consumers.

Mr. Hoang Thanh Nam - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Da Huoai district said that in order to encourage farmers to compete in production and business, the Associations at all levels actively propagate and mobilize farmers to actively change the structure of crops and livestock, change the season, cultivate aquaculture and grow vegetables, focus on production in specialized areas, and apply mechanization models in production. In particular, the Farmers' Association of Da Huoai district has called on cadres, farmer members directly involved in agricultural production and agricultural product production workers in the district to actively respond to the implementation of the criteria of "Kind farmers".

Implementing the movement, the Farmers' Association of Da Huoai district calls on farmers to produce and sell agricultural products to the market that must ensure their use value, food hygiene and safety, not causing the spread of diseases and environmental pollution. On the other hand, when farmers in the district produce and sell products to the market that ensure quality and food hygiene and safety, the level of trust in agricultural products is increased, product brands are developed, helping to increase product value and farmers' income. In particular, for Da Huoai district - where there is a large durian growing area in Lam Dong province in particular and the whole country in general, implementing the criteria of "Kind farmers" in durian production will help spread and develop the brand "Da Huoai durian".

In addition, when detecting pests and diseases on crops and livestock that are likely to spread into epidemics, farmers need to immediately notify the authorities and neighboring farmers in the same industry to implement epidemic prevention and control; when knowing the measures to prevent and treat epidemics, they are ready to share their experiences with other farmers. At the same time, farmers do not litter packaging, pesticide containers, cleaning water containing pesticides, dead animals into lakes, rivers, streams, or other places that cause more serious environmental pollution. Have a spirit of solidarity with neighboring farmers to protect assets, labor tools, and crops; be ready to share production experiences with other farmers.

The movement aims to raise the responsibility of farmers in production and business; fight against and limit the production and sale of products that do not ensure quality and food safety, causing environmental pollution. Thereby, improving product quality, developing the brand of agricultural products of Da Huoai farmers; spreading good people, firmly consolidating the characteristics of Da Huoai people "Diligence - Creativity - Affection", contributing to building the homeland of Da Huoai increasingly rich, beautiful, civilized and affectionate.
