Tri Ton proactively prevents and combats drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion

- In anticipation of drought and saltwater intrusion in this year's dry season, Tri Ton district has proactively taken measures to prevent water shortages, droughts and saltwater intrusion. On that basis, it contributes to protecting production and people's lives in the 2025 dry season in the district.

According to the forecast of the functional sector, from January to June 2025, ENSO is likely to continue to remain in a neutral state. In addition, from March, some localities in the province are likely to experience local heat waves, such as: Tri Ton District, An Phu, Chau Phu, Tinh Bien Town, Tan Chau Town, Chau Doc City. In addition, in the dry season of 2024 - 2025, the Mekong River basin and the province are likely to experience many unseasonal rains. However, due to increased demand for water in the upstream area, the total flow of the Mekong River to the headwaters of the Cuu Long River will be low. Meanwhile, the salinity of the estuary in Kien Giang province will be higher than the annual average, the highest salinity will appear in March - April 2025 and there is a possibility of sudden increases in salinity due to rising sea levels.

According to the agricultural sector of Tri Ton district, the development of saltwater intrusion in the border area between An Giang and Kien Giang provinces in Thoai Son and Tri Ton districts depends on the water source of the Mekong River and the operation of the irrigation system in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle. Warnings of drought and local water shortages are likely to occur in some places in Tinh Bien town and Tri Ton district during the peak months of the dry season in 2025.

Farmers need to proactively take measures to ensure irrigation water in the dry season.

Faced with current climate change, scientific research agencies predict that water shortages for agricultural production and people's lives are likely to occur in the district in high mounds and near mountain slopes. Meanwhile, areas likely to be affected by water shortages for production are Lac Quoi commune, the northern bank of Vinh Hoa (250ha); the northern bank of Vinh Thuan (150ha).

To proactively prevent and combat drought, water shortages, and saltwater intrusion in the dry season of 2025, Chairman of Tri Ton District People's Committee Nguyen Van Be Tam, Head of the Steering Committee for Climate Change Response - Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Civil Defense of Tri Ton District, requested all sectors and levels to thoroughly grasp and strictly implement the motto "4 on-site" (on-site command; on-site forces; on-site means and materials; on-site logistics) and "3 ready" (proactive prevention, timely response, urgent and effective recovery, in which prevention is the main focus).

In the immediate future, the Chairman of the Tri Ton District People's Committee requested localities with irrigation works to coordinate with management units to arrange and structure agricultural production in accordance with the ability to balance water resources. Localities far from or without irrigation works, farming areas that rely on rainwater and water recycled from irrigation works need to advise people to proactively cultivate, change crop structure to ensure effective land use. Mobilize people's resources to dredge intra-field canals; promote economical and effective water use...

For units managing and exploiting irrigation works, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Tri Ton district requested to regularly monitor the weather and water levels of reservoirs, closely coordinate with local authorities to make production plans, and recommend changing crop structures in unstable places where irrigation water sources are not proactive. Regularly maintain machinery and equipment at pumping stations, water control valves, and opening and closing machines; urgently repair severely damaged works, dredge reservoirs and canals to ensure no leakage or loss of water. At the same time, launch a drought-fighting movement among the people; promptly encourage and reward units, organizations, and individuals with outstanding achievements in drought prevention and control.

In the long term, the People's Committee of Tri Ton district requires sectors and localities to increase information and propaganda about the impact of the El Nino phenomenon, drought, saltwater intrusion, and the possibility of water shortages. Regularly monitor the hydrometeorological situation and promptly inform localities to proactively develop plans to ensure safe water sources for production and people's daily life.

In addition, promote propaganda and guide people to change crops on inefficient rice fields, use water economically in daily life and production; raise awareness and knowledge about forest fire prevention and fighting. Timely prevent and strictly handle cases of arbitrarily blocking, building, digging canals to get water not according to irrigation plans...

In addition, strengthen the management and operation of works, save water and prevent water pollution; promote the conversion of crop and livestock varieties to adapt to drought and saltwater intrusion.
