Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh meets with the Secretary General of the United Nations

United Nations leaders highly appreciated Vietnam's position and role in ASEAN; affirmed their support for ASEAN's central role in the regional security structure.

On March 11, information from the National Assembly Office said that on March 10, 2025, on the occasion of attending the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, USA, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the United Nations General Assembly Philémon Yang, Vice Chairwoman of the Kyrgyz National Assembly Dzhamalia Isaeva, President of the Lao Women's Union Aly Vongnobountham, received Permanent Representative of the Vatican to the United Nations Gabriele Giordano Caccia and visited the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations.

At meetings with United Nations leaders, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh shared her assessment of the challenges facing international cooperation in addressing current global issues, affirming Vietnam's strong support for multilateralism, including the central role of the United Nations in coordinating global efforts. In the context of the United Nations and Vietnam celebrating the 80th anniversary of their founding and gaining independence in 2025, the Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly proposed practical measures to strengthen cooperation between the two sides as well as strengthen the connection of parliamentary cooperation mechanisms to create closer ties between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the major goals and activities of the United Nations; and proposed creating conditions for more Vietnamese people, including women, to work at United Nations agencies. The head of the Vietnamese delegation also asked the United Nations to support ASEAN's role and efforts in ensuring regional security, including compliance with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

On this occasion, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh respectfully conveyed a letter from President Luong Cuong inviting the UN Secretary-General to make an official visit to Vietnam in 2025, and expressed her wish for the Secretary-General to visit the Vietnamese National Assembly.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deep affection for the country and people of Vietnam and respectfully conveyed his best regards to General Secretary To Lam, President Luong Cuong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man. Mr. Guterres happily accepted President Luong Cuong's invitation and looked forward to visiting Vietnam at an appropriate time.

President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang highly appreciated Vietnam's strong development, respect for international law, good relations with all countries, and active contributions to international peace, security and sustainable development of the world. Mr. Philemon Yang highlighted the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Cameroon, especially in Vietnam's strong fields such as science and technology and telecommunications; and expressed his special impression of Vietnam's efforts and achievements in gender equality.

UN leaders highly appreciated Vietnam's position and role in ASEAN; affirmed their support for ASEAN's central role in the regional security structure, strengthened ASEAN-UN cooperation, and supported having more Vietnamese people working for the UN.

At the meeting with the Vice President of the Kyrgyz National Assembly, Vice President of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh suggested that the two legislative bodies increase the exchange of high-level delegations, specialized committees and National Assembly deputies to share experiences in parliamentary activities, especially in the fields of legislation and supervision, including supervision and urging the effective implementation of cooperation agreements signed during the recent visit of Kyrgyz Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliev; coordinate and support each other at multilateral parliamentary forums; consider and study the establishment of the Friendship Group of Thinkers. The Vice President of the National Assembly suggested that the two countries closely coordinate to promote bilateral cooperation, especially in economics, trade, investment, tourism, education-training and culture.

Ms. Dzhamalia Isaeva highly appreciated the good traditional relations between the two countries, especially the visit to Kyrgyzstan by Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Khac Dinh in September 2023 and the recent visit to Vietnam by the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan; proposed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in education and training, including implementing the recently signed agreement in this field; expressed the hope that Vietnam would support Kyrgyzstan's candidacy for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term and Kyrgyzstan's initiatives and events in 2025 related to the environment and climate change, conservation, maintenance and development of mountainous areas.

At the meeting with Ms. Aly Vongnobountham, President of the Lao Women's Union, Vice President of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh affirmed the close solidarity between Vietnam and Laos, including between the two groups of female deputies of the Vietnamese and Lao National Assembly, congratulated the great achievements of the renovation process achieved by the Party, State and People of Laos, proposed that the National Assemblies of the two countries continue to promote bilateral cooperation and closely coordinate at multilateral parliamentary forums, proposed that the two Women's Unions of Vietnam and Laos continue to strengthen cooperation, closely coordinate, support and assist each other, announced that the Vietnam Women's Union will host the ASEAN Confederation of Women's Organizations (ACWO) Leadership Meeting in May 2025 and will invite the Lao Women's Union to attend.

Ms. Aly Vongnobountham expressed her pleasure to meet Vice President of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh, informed about Laos' efforts in implementing gender equality, such as striving to achieve gender equality among middle-level leaders, aiming to reach 30% of women in the National Assembly, amending the laws of the Lao Women's Union and on Child Protection and Care, affirming to continue to cooperate closely with Vietnamese agencies and organizations, contributing to and fostering the special friendship between the two Parties, States and People.

According to the conference program, on March 12, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh will give an important speech at the general discussion session of the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
