France has for the first time tested a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) that is said to be capable of challenging interception systems due to its unpredictable flight trajectory.
HGVs can reach speeds in excess of Mach 5 (i.e. 6,000 km/h). This technology is being developed by a number of countries, including the US, Russia and China. Unlike ballistic missiles, which have a fixed trajectory after launch, the flight path of HGVs can change at high speed at any point during flight, allowing them to bypass air defense systems.
The French HGV, called V-Max, was launched from a research rocket and flew over southern France. Ahead of the test, French authorities issued a warning for air and sea traffic in an area spanning about 2,000km.
The V-Max was developed by the Ariane Groupe Defense Company, a space launch company best known for its Ariane rockets.
