A Chinese doctor, before dying of cancer, left his largest asset, a house, to his newlywed wife, which left his parents shocked and indignant.
Parents put all their money into sending their son to study abroad.
Liu Kun was born to factory workers in Shandong Province, China. Liu Kun had excellent academic records and wanted to study abroad in England.
When he learned this, his father, Liu Weidong, was very surprised and worried. After learning about the huge cost of studying abroad, he intended to advise his son to give up.
But thanks to his wife's persuasion, he decided to gather all his assets and live frugally so that his son and family could have a better future.
Liu Kun was successfully admitted to a university in Manchester (UK). To help his son pay for his life in expensive Europe, Liu Wei Dong and his wife had to work very hard, even constantly borrowing money from relatives despite gossip.
Not disappointing his parents' expectations, the young man excelled in his studies, even earning a PhD, then found a job in the medical field with a high salary and planned to settle in England.
Liu Weidong and his wife had also pooled all their savings and borrowed money from many places to help their son buy a house in England. After all, they thought that their old age, being supported by their son, was very near and they were looking forward to the future happily.
During 12 years of studying abroad, the young man surnamed Liu only returned home twice to visit his parents to save money.
In 2015, Liu Kun suddenly called home and announced that he was getting married. Hearing the news, Liu Wei Dong and his wife were shocked and immediately took a flight to England to see what was happening, because until then, they had no idea that their son had a girlfriend.
After the long flight, Liu Kun's parents thought they would see their son again in a happy, joyful wedding scene. But what they saw was their skinny, sickly son lying on a hospital bed.
Next to the hospital bed was a lawyer and a strange girl they had met for the first time. That was the future daughter-in-law they had never seen before - Ngo Tuyen.
It turned out that Liu Kun had been diagnosed with cancer and was unlikely to survive, so he decided to hide it from his parents, which made it even harder for them to accept. Liu Kun and Wu Xuan held a simple wedding in the hospital and just 3 weeks later, he passed away.
After finishing their son's funeral, the old couple thought about the last asset he left behind, a house worth 3.75 million NDT (about 12.7 billion VND).
But when Mr. and Mrs. Liu asked Ngo Tuyen about the house, she insisted that it was hers: "This is my house. Before Liu Khon passed away, he made a will to leave it to me."
Originally, Mr. and Mrs. Liu had spent more than 2 million NDT (6.8 billion VND) to support their son's education and buy a house, but now hearing that they could not use the house was something the couple could not accept.
Suing new daughter-in-law over inherited real estate
After a period of unsuccessful negotiations with Wu Xuan, the Liu family decided to sue. They claimed that the young woman had plotted to trick her son into signing a will while unconscious. However, the Liu couple had no evidence for this hypothesis and Wu Xuan's side also provided evidence that her family had also contributed 1.7 million yuan to buy the house.
So after 4 years of litigation, the court officially awarded ownership of the house to Ngo Tuyen in 2019.
This verdict made Liu Weidong and his wife cry in court after a long time pursuing the lawsuit that exhausted them both mentally and physically.
In the eyes of Ngo Tuyen, he was just an outsider. Liu Kun's house also had money contributed by the Liu couple, so Liu Ve Dong and his wife were even more heartbroken.
But because Liu Kun's will was signed while he was completely sober and had a lawyer as witness, Mr. and Mrs. Liu had no choice but to accept this fact.
In fact, Ngo Tuyen and Luu Khon started dating when they first arrived in England in 2003. But because Luu Khon's parents always opposed his love life, fearing that it would affect his studies, he always hid Ngo Tuyen from his parents.
Until Liu Kun discovered that he was sick and during his entire struggle in the hospital, Wu Xuan was always by her side to take care of her. He was very touched and decided to marry her before he passed away. According to the lawyer, Liu Kun's will originally had a part divided among both parents, but in the final version, he crossed that part out.
The case attracted the attention of the British and Chinese media and public for a long time. Many people were puzzled by Liu Kun's decision to let his newlywed wife inherit everything, leaving no money to his parents, who had worked hard to help him study abroad as he wished. On the other hand, Wu Xuan was also criticized for being too cold to her late husband's parents.
