AFP news agency reported that, according to the decree posted on the Telegram account of the Syrian Presidential Palace, this agency will be tasked with "coordinating and supervising the implementation of security and political policies".

The decree states that the agency was created “in an effort to strengthen national security and address security-political challenges in the coming period.” The agency did not exist under former leader Bashar al-Assad.

Other members of the council will include the foreign minister, the defence minister, the interior minister and the head of the country's intelligence agency. The council will also have two "advisory" members and a technical expert appointed by al-Sharaa.

Council meetings will be held periodically or as the President decides and "decisions relating to national security and challenges facing the state will be taken after consultation with members".

Regarding the ongoing sectarian conflict in western Syria, the opposition Social Nationalist Party recently officially called on the United Nations (UN) Security Council to approve the deployment of peacekeeping forces from the Arab League (AL) in this country.

Tarek Ahmad, a member of the party's political wing, told RIA Novosti that this solution is considered the most reasonable option in the current situation, emphasizing the advantage of good relations between major powers such as Russia and the United States with many Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and Algeria.

The Syrian opposition party representative expressed hope that the Security Council will allow Arab forces to help restore peace throughout the country, including the provinces of Daraa, Suwayda and Quneitra in the south and southwest of the country.

Mr Ahmad cited a precedent from 1976 in Lebanon, where Arab troops were deployed successfully thanks to their linguistic advantage and ability to establish good relations with the local population.

Last week, fierce clashes broke out between Syrian security forces and armed rebels in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus, killing nearly 1,500 people. On March 10, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called for an immediate ceasefire in Syria's coastal areas.
