Dropping out of two years of Pharmacy, Anh Em switched to Automotive Engineering and became valedictorian and lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology.
Bui Thi Anh Em, 25 years old, from An Giang, received the results of her admission to the official lecturer position at the Institute of Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) at the end of January. After Tet, she will go to school to work in the Department of Automotive Engineering Technology, which is also the major that Em is studying.
"Becoming a university lecturer has been my goal since my first years of university, so when I was accepted, I was very happy and excited," Anh Em shared.

A year ago, Anh Em was the valedictorian of HUTECH's 2023 graduation class with a GPA of 3.32/4. She still remembers the surprise and overwhelming feeling when she learned that she was the valedictorian of the school because on the day she chose her major, Anh Em encountered many dissuading and skeptical opinions.
After graduating from high school, Anh Em studied Pharmacy at a university in An Giang. However, because of her love for engineering, after two years, the female student decided to quit and then applied to the Automotive Engineering Technology major at HUTECH.
"Many people think that mechanical and automotive industries are not for women. When I chose this industry, many people asked me if I had the physical strength, or if there were any garages that hired female employees to assemble, crawl under cars, and repair machinery," Em recalls.
According to Anh Em, the idea that girls are always weaker than men in engineering fields comes from the fact that many people still think of auto engineers as "crawling under the car". In fact, engineering fields in particular and Automotive Engineering Technology are developing towards automation. This is also a group of fields that require meticulousness and precision to every detail. Female graduates in this field also have many options after graduation, depending on their interests and skills, they can choose to be supervisors in production and assembly plants or take on design consulting or inspection work.
Another thing that put no less pressure on her was the prejudice that private schools were only for weak students who failed university entrance exams. The gossip of many people around her made Em feel sad when she first entered school.
"The more I am criticized, the more I want to try and prove that I can do it, to break the stereotype," Anh Em said, adding that this is the motivation for her to try to study and maintain good results.
On the first day of school, many students thought Anh Em was in the wrong room. In the whole class of 60 students, Em was the only female. At first, she was also hesitant because she was surrounded by boys. Gradually, Anh Em got acquainted and integrated with the whole class. During the practice sessions with machines and engines, Anh Em was as active as the boys.
In addition to trying to complete her studies well, the female student is active in student movements. There are days when she participates in activities from morning to afternoon, and then comes back to her desk to study at night.
During her four years at university, Anh Em twice won the title of 5 Good Students of Ho Chi Minh City, 5 Good Students at the central level and the January Star Award in 2023. She also has two scientific articles published in the journal Fuel (ISI-Q1) and the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (ISI-Q1) on optimizing the performance, emissions and fuel of diesel engines.
She and her friends participated in many competitions in the field of automobiles. Most recently, Anh Em's group won second prize at the Mitsubishi Electric Cup MECA 2023 competition specializing in automation engineering and control.
After finishing her internship, in early 2023, Anh Em was retained to work officially at an auto trading company as a customer consultant. Remembering her dream of becoming a lecturer, after a year, Anh Em returned to work as a teaching assistant for teachers at the Technical Institute. She then applied to become a lecturer and was accepted, at the age of 25.

Dr. Nguyen Van Nhanh, Vice President of HUTECH Institute of Technology, was impressed with Anh Em from the first day of class. With a passion for technology and automobiles, Anh Em is very diligent, making up for her physical limitations compared to her male friends. Moreover, the automobile industry has applied new technologies and artificial intelligence to automatic control, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair, so Anh Em is quite advantageous.
"Anh Em is very individualistic. What the boys can do, she can do too, no less. She also had a job early on before graduating, but she missed the university environment so she returned," said Dr. Nhanh.
Becoming a university lecturer is both a joy and a challenge for Anh Em. She said she is studying for a master’s degree in Automotive Engineering at the university to improve her teaching skills and learn teaching methods from her senior teachers.
