"As the valedictorian of block D01 of our school, do you take extra classes or prioritize self-study or online learning?", a student from Ho Chi Minh City wondered.
This morning, February 17, the dialogue program with valedictorians took place at Le Trong Tan High School, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City. At the program, tutors who are students, former valedictorians and excellent former students of Le Trong Tan High School shared many experiences about extra classes and self-study, preparing for the high school graduation exam that will take place next June.

Answering the question "Do valedictorians take extra classes?", Nguyen Van Ngoc, an accounting student at Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City campus 2, valedictorian of block D01 (math, literature, English) at Chu Van An High School (Gia Nghia City, Dak Nong Province) in 2023 with 27.5 points, said that she has combined studying in class, taking extra classes outside, self-studying and following online review sessions of teachers.
"With my learning experience, I prioritize paying attention to the knowledge that teachers teach directly in class. When teachers teach directly, it's easier to grasp, and it's easier to ask questions if there's anything I don't understand," Van Ngoc said.

Nguyen Van Ngoc's 2023 high school graduation exam scores are: math 9.0; English 9.2; literature 9.3. Van Ngoc also won third prize in the provincial excellent student competition in English. The valedictorian, who is a tutor at eTeacher, shared that her learning experience is also "self-studying by watching livestreams of teachers of various subjects on Facebook or TikTok to improve the types of exercises or how to solve them".

"I lost my foundation, studying again is too much"
That was the confession of a student from Le Trong Tan High School in this morning's program. Ngo Khanh Duy, a student majoring in statistics at Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH), valedictorian of the A00 group at Hoang Hoa Tham High School, Ho Chi Minh City in 2023 with an exam score of 26.3, shared: "When studying and reviewing for exams, students should not put too much pressure on themselves."
"My experience is to learn knowledge in order, divide knowledge into small parts, not study too much, spend more time resting and I find that there is enough time to both review and learn new knowledge," added the valedictorian of A00 at Hoang Hoa Tham High School.
To get a high score in literature, do you need to study more or read more?
At this morning's program, Van Ta Hong Tinh, who scored 9.25 points in the 2024 high school graduation exam, a former student of Le Trong Tan High School, Ho Chi Minh City (currently a student of the Music Department, Ho Chi Minh City College of Culture and Arts, with a score of 25.75 in the gifted N group) shared many experiences with the students of the next course.
According to Hong Tinh, students should not spend all their efforts on just 3 subjects in the university entrance exam combination they choose. Students should allocate more time to review for subjects that must be tested in the high school graduation exam. Students should also refer to the sample exam structure of the Ministry of Education and Training.

"Especially, in literature, to get a high score, students need to have a fairly deep level of knowledge, so they should read more books and literary works outside of textbooks. In my opinion, the experience to get a high score is that the test needs to be developed and presented neatly, because basically, the change in quantity leads to a change in quality. When the examiner sees a long essay, it is likely that the candidate's knowledge will be highly appreciated because many ideas can develop the essay. However, writing long does not mean writing rambling. This also depends on the knowledge and writing ability of the candidates", noted Hong Tinh, who achieved 9.25 points in literature in the 2024 high school graduation exam.
The Dialogue with the 2025 Valedictorian Program is co-organized by eTeacher Tutoring Company and Le Trong Tan High School, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City. This year's theme is Target Lock-On, with the message that students need to clearly define their goals and build a suitable study plan. 2,000 students from Le Trong Tan High School participated, many of them asked many questions because this year the 2018 General Education Program enters its 5th year, and 12th graders will participate in the high school graduation exam with many new things and challenges.
Don't compare yourself negatively to others.
In response to a student's question "How to accurately determine your goals and not be easily swayed or changed?", valedictorian Ngo Khanh Duy said that first, each student needs to ask themselves the questions "What are my strengths and weaknesses?", "What are my opportunities and challenges?". Initially, it may be difficult for each person to answer these questions, but each person should take the time to learn about themselves, ask teachers, ask seniors, refer to YouTube... to be able to see more clearly about the path they intend to pursue.
In addition, the valedictorian, who is a student majoring in statistics at the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, believes that each person should set clear and specific goals. For example, instead of setting a vague goal of "I want to pass the university entrance exam", the goal should be "I want to achieve 26+ points in block A to pass the financial mathematics major at the University of Economics, because this major is suitable for my interest in mathematics". The more specific the goal, the easier it is for each student to plan to achieve it.
"Finally, don't compare yourself to others negatively. Some people often use other people's role models as motivation to try harder. However, if you compare negatively, it will make you doubt your own abilities, peer pressure, and gradually lose motivation to study. When I was in grade 12, I studied with many good friends from specialized schools. Sometimes I felt a bit self-conscious because they were so good. But I also understand that each person has their own abilities and learning path, so I just need to focus on my own learning goals, making progress today compared to yesterday, and keeping the original goal is also good," Duy expressed.
