(NLDO) - With 15 years of experience in the profession, teacher Pham Thi Kim Oanh has always made constant efforts to bring knowledge to students in the mountainous border district of Thanh Hoa.

Teacher Pham Thi Kim Oanh was born in 1987, from Muong Min commune, Quan Son border district, Thanh Hoa province. In 2009, after graduating from university, she returned to Quan Son Secondary and High School to work and has devoted herself to the school for the past 15 years.

Born and raised in a land with many difficulties and hardships, when assigned to the school, Ms. Pham Thi Kim Oanh knew that she had to try very hard to impart knowledge to the students here. Because Quan Son Secondary and High School is located in and attracts students from particularly difficult communes of the district (Son Dien, Son Thuy, Muong Min, Na Meo), where there are up to 3 Mong ethnic villages, many of which are remote, dozens of kilometers away from the school.

Understanding that, right from the first days of coming to school, despite the lack of facilities and teaching equipment, Ms. Oanh always tried her best and devoted herself to her students. According to her, in addition to teaching in class, the teachers in the school often had to go to the villages to persuade families to send their children to school and class.

"Before the school was established, most students in the poor communes dropped out of school after finishing 9th grade, because at that time the whole district had only one high school located in town. Students had to travel 30 km to go to school, sometimes up to 60 km. If anyone went to school, they had to set up a tent or stay in a rented house, while the families in the highlands were still very poor, so their children's education was not given proper attention," Ms. Oanh shared.

According to Ms. Kim Oanh, students in mountainous areas have a low starting point, so in the teaching process, teachers need to develop appropriate lesson plans so that students can best absorb basic knowledge.

Because they lived in a poor area, since the 6th grade, Ms. Oanh and her siblings had to leave their families, "packing rice and rice balls" to go to town, about 30 km away from home, to study. By the time she was in high school, the school did not have a dormitory, so she herself had to set up a tent near the school to eat, live and study.

"The difficulties of that day are beyond description. Therefore, after returning to my hometown to teach, I always try to impart the best knowledge I have to my students, hoping that they will have the knowledge to confidently step into life" - Ms. Oanh confided.

Ms. Oanh added that students in the highlands are mainly ethnic minorities and their families are still poor, so the situation of dropping out of school is still common. Many students are in difficult circumstances and many students are not confident in their studies. Therefore, for students who show signs of decline or dropping out of school, she will approach them, understand their feelings, and then discuss with their families, even go to their homes to encourage their families and share so that they can feel secure in going to school.

For the past 15 years, teacher Pham Thi Kim Oanh has always strived for students in mountainous areas.

Due to their low starting point, their basic knowledge cannot keep up with students from the lowlands. Therefore, according to Ms. Oanh, during the teaching process, teachers in the school must develop plans and teaching methods appropriate to their abilities so that students can best absorb basic knowledge.

During her time in class, this female teacher also regularly cares for all students, especially weak students with difficult circumstances. She often confides, shares, and guides them to have ideal goals and determination to study.

"We teachers also often remind students that only through education can they change their lives and have a bright future. We also often use the examples of teachers in the school, who were also born in the village and have strived to grow up to become who they are today, as motivation for students to follow," said Ms. Oanh.

Teacher Ta Quoc Viet, Principal of Quan Son Secondary and High School, said that over the years, Ms. Oanh has always been an excellent teacher of the school in the Biology subject, and was trusted by the school's Board of Directors to be the Head of the Natural Science Group 2. Notably, in the 2023-2024 school year, for the first time since its establishment, the school had a student tutored and guided by her to win an Encouragement Prize in the Provincial Excellent Student Competition in the Natural Science subject (Biology).

According to Mr. Viet, the school is located in the most difficult area of Quan Son district, so since its establishment, with the attention of the education sector and local authorities, the school's facilities and teaching equipment have been invested heavily, basically meeting the needs of teaching and learning.

"Compared to the early days of the school's establishment, the quality of education has improved day by day. Many students have achieved high grades and returned to serve the school and the locality after graduating. A typical example is Ms. Pham Thi Kim Oanh. Ms. Oanh is a dynamic teacher, not afraid of difficulties or hardships, dedicated to her work, always devoted to her students and the school," said Mr. Viet.
