Create a positive and responsible learning environment, rather than a ban.

That is the opinion of many experts when schools tighten the use of cell phones by students.

Need to "connect" technology with education

Mr. Phan Vinh Thang, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Education and Training Association , said that smartphones have now become "inseparable" for many people. It is not only a communication tool but also a way to explore the world. Teachers can use smartphones to create lively, highly interactive lessons in the classroom.

According to Mr. Thang, students should not be banned from using phones in school but should be limited; there should be lessons where teachers encourage students to use phones so that they can apply technology to their studies.

Agreeing with the above view, Ms. Nguyen Hoang Anh, Director of the Center for Family Health and Community Development (CFC) Vietnam, we should have regulations to both ensure learning and meet students' connection needs.

Emphasizing the shortcomings of absolutely banning students from using phones in school, Ms. Nguyen Hoang Anh stated: "High school students need to use phones to find documents in the context of the education sector innovating teaching methods towards developing students' capacity. Without technological devices, students are limited in finding information online and useful software."

According to experts, in the digital age, integrating technology into the teaching and learning process is an inevitable trend. Absolutely banning students from using phones in school can make them feel curious, even trying to use their phones secretly.

Therefore, banning students from using cell phones in schools needs to be appropriate for each grade and subject to both ensure discipline and encourage students to use technology effectively in learning.

Proposed solutions to prevent the impact of phone abuse

Proposing some solutions to this problem, teacher Cao Linh (Professional Management Department, eTeacher Tutoring Company, HCMC) said:

Firstly, in subjects that require searching for knowledge outside of textbooks or group presentations, schools need to allow students to use phones within a certain time frame, under the supervision of subject teachers.

Second, the school organizes discussions on the benefits and disadvantages of using technology in learning, helping students form critical views and skills, identify negative impacts if they overuse their phones, and create the ability to proactively "defend" themselves against the challenges of technology.

Third, short campaigns like “No Phone Time” can be organized, where students will not use their phones for a certain number of hours a day and share their personal feelings about this during class activities.

Instead of banning, teachers should create a positive learning environment and encourage students to use the internet responsibly, according to Ms. Nguyen Hoang Anh, Director of CFC Vietnam.

In addition to providing knowledge about cyber safety, schools need to teach students the skills to evaluate information, distinguish right from wrong, and use search engines effectively.

Most importantly, equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect themselves in the online environment. Schools can set rules such as not using phones in the cafeteria or during class. Students can use their phones to look up information for their studies in the library or other designated areas.

"We are researching a number of AI tools to support and guide students in using AI responsibly. We have also coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Training to implement the program "I am safe with Google", instructing primary school students on cyber safety skills.

In addition to creating a "firewall" to block bad websites, it is necessary to instruct children in safe and effective internet usage skills. Skills and techniques must always go hand in hand," said Ms. Hoang Anh.
