In the group stage, Sinner played impressively after 3 sets against Djokovic. However, the player from the host country Italy could not repeat that impressive form when facing Djokovic in the final.
The Serbian has a wealth of experience in major finals and he used his full strength to crush his opponent's aspirations.
Djokovic showed his power to his opponent with a clean sweep of the game as he entered the final. Sinner seemed a bit nervous about playing in the final of a major tournament, as he quickly let Djokovic break him in the fourth game.
Taking a 3-1 lead, Djokovic left his opponent with no chance of catching up when he only dropped one point in the next three games of serving, winning 6-3.
The world number one played brilliantly in the first set, winning 20 points in 22 serves in the first set, taking just 38 minutes to win.
Sinner showed no signs of recovery when he made a mistake and lost the break in the first game of the second set. The Italian played erratically in the following service games, constantly having to save the break, but the Italian still tried to catch up.
Sinner's best return game was the sixth game, when he had a double break-point but Djokovic saved the game. Unable to break his opponent's game, Sinner was broken again in game 9 and won 6-3, thereby closing the final after one hour and 43 minutes.
With the victory at the 2023 ATP Finals, Djokovic has won this tournament for the 7th time (2008, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2022, 2023), he surpassed Roger Federer to set a new championship record of the tournament.
Djokovic also raised his total number of major titles in his career to 71 (24 Grand Slams, 7 ATP Finals, 40 Masters 1000), far surpassing Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
