Over the years, the foundation of Vietnam-China trade relations has always been stable and growing strongly. This is a favorable opportunity for Vietnamese businesses and industries to continue increasing exports to this market of 1.4 billion people.

Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the General Administration of Customs of China officially signed three important protocols, paving the way for the export of fresh coconuts, frozen durians and crocodiles to China.

The signing ceremony took place during the State visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to China.

Paving the way for billion-dollar agricultural exports

The Protocols signed this time include: Protocol on inspection, plant quarantine and food safety for frozen durian exported from Vietnam to China; Protocol on plant quarantine requirements for fresh coconut exported from Vietnam to China and Protocol on quarantine and health requirements for farmed crocodiles exported from Vietnam to China.

Among the three groups of products that have just signed the protocol, frozen durian is considered the product with the largest export value, contributing significantly to agricultural export turnover. In 2023, Vietnam exported about 500,000 tons of fresh durian, reaching a turnover of 2.3 billion USD, of which exports to China accounted for 90%.

According to the assessment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, frozen durian (including whole durian with shell, pureed durian and de-shelled durian pulp) is a new product with higher added value than fresh durian. Opening the market for this product will help diversify processing, reduce pressure on harvest season, and create greater added value for the durian industry.

It is expected that frozen durian exports can reach an export turnover of 400 - 500 million USD in 2024.

Fresh coconut is also a product with great export potential. Currently, Vietnam is one of the largest coconut producing and exporting countries in the world, with a planting area of about 175,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in the Mekong Delta. With the opening of the Chinese market, fresh coconut export turnover is expected to increase by 200 - 300 million USD in 2024, and is forecast to grow strongly in the following years.

Opening the Chinese market to crocodiles will create great opportunities for the industry. This is not only an economic opportunity, but also a driving force for the Vietnamese crocodile farming industry to develop in a sustainable direction, ensuring environmental standards and animal welfare.

Ready quality source

As a company with 12 years of experience exporting durian to the Chinese market, Vinh Khang Group Joint Stock Company is waiting for the opportunity from frozen durian being exported to China. Currently, the company is ready to prepare the conditions to be able to participate in exporting this product.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vinh Khang Group Joint Stock Company Doan Thuy Giang shared that since the signing of the Protocol, Vietnamese durian exports to China have increased sharply. Each crop, the company exports more than 60 containers, each container carrying about 18 tons of fresh durian. The price of Vietnamese durian is more competitive than that of Thailand, so it is attractive to Chinese importers.

Regarding coconut products, General Director of Datafa Company Limited Pham Thanh Danh said that last year the company participated in a fair in China and found a partner. Accordingly, the company exports an average of 4 containers of coconut water products to the Chinese market each month. In order for products to reach the Chinese market, businesses always meet two important factors: quality and price.

Talking about solutions to develop the Chinese market, Deputy Director of the Asia-Africa Market Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) To Ngoc Son said that timely information capture and flexible adaptation to changes in the Chinese market are extremely necessary to maintain and develop the export market.

Currently, many Vietnamese agricultural products have basically dominated the Chinese market. The issue that export enterprises need to pay attention to is how to maintain market share as well as increase added value for exported fruits. For agricultural products whose export value to the market is still modest such as mango, longan... it is necessary to focus on market research, brand building and trade promotion to increase export value to this market.

In addition, businesses need to proactively recruit employees who are fluent in Chinese to be able to conduct direct transactions, learn about market information as well as relevant regulations of the Chinese side to be more proactive in doing business with the market.

"It is necessary to focus on trade promotion activities such as proactively participating in specialized fairs on agricultural products in China to promote and introduce products, especially branded agricultural products. Thereby, finding reputable importers to export agricultural products to the Chinese market in a formal and methodical manner...".
