The first-instance trial of defendant Nguyen Hong Quan, 21 years old, accused of murder took place on a July morning. During nearly 2 hours of interrogation, the defendant clearly confessed his crimes. At times, the defendant was so scared that he could not speak...

The court tried Nguyen Hong Quan for murder.

The sound of the exhaust pipe is cruel.

The representative of the People's Procuracy accused the defendant Quan of being hooligan and aggressive and needed to be severely punished.

At 1:00 a.m. on March 29, 2022, after getting drunk, Quan drove his girlfriend on a concrete road in Area 1, Lai Hieu Ward, Nga Bay City, when two young men on a motorbike overtook him from behind and revved their engines. Thinking that these two were challenging him, Quan chased after them, grabbed the steering wheel to block the car, but failed. Still drunk, Quan continued to drive after the two young men to their house on 30/4 Street, in Area 2, Lai Hieu Ward.

At this time, seeing many people running out of the house, Quan turned the car around and drove to an acquaintance's house in Nga Bay city; then returned with a homemade knife nearly half a meter long in his hand, swung it high and slashed Nguyen Bao Minh Truong and Lam Huu Nghi many times...

The consequence that anyone who witnessed it would have thought was that both of them collapsed on the spot and had to be transferred to Can Tho City Central General Hospital for emergency treatment.

In court, defendant Quan said he did not intend to slash Truong and Nghi, but was drunk and could not control himself, so he committed a serious crime and hoped the jury would consider it so he could have a chance to repent and start his life over.

The defendant defended himself: "It was dark at that time, so when I saw a crowd, I thought everyone wanted to beat me up, so I grabbed them and didn't want to kill or injure anyone..."

Prosecutor: Defendant, please clarify whether you swung or slashed. Swinging would have been a different injury, but the injuries you inflicted on the victim were very deep, from the head to the shoulder, all dangerous spots.

- It must be said that it is a slash, not a sweeping exaggeration.

- So the indictment charges the defendant with murder, do you think it is correct?

The prosecutor's questions made the 21-year-old defendant bow his head and sincerely admit: "Yes, that's right."

I go to jail, who will you live with?

“When you caused injury to another person, did you foresee the consequences? Did you think that in just a little bit more, you could destroy another person’s family?”, the presiding judge asked.

“Yes, I also have parents so I know. I am very sorry…”, defendant Quan could only say that much and then cried…

Sitting huddled in the audience seats, Mrs. N., Quan's mother, tried to raise her eyes toward the witness stand to see her son, even if only from behind.

Throughout the trial, every time she heard the jury’s questions and Quan’s stuttering answers out of fear, she would lower her head and sob. She didn’t even dare look around for fear that someone in the courtroom would look at her with… contemptuous eyes.

Her family's life revolved around only the mother and son. The day she heard that Quan was arrested for a serious crime, Mrs. N's heart was broken when her only son, whom she loved dearly, took the wrong path. Mrs. N. was already in poor health, so since the day Quan was detained, she had trouble sleeping every day and was clearly depressed...

When it was time for the verdict, she tried to squeeze a few more rows of seats and asked the police to let her talk to her son for a few minutes. Because she knew that in just a few minutes after the verdict was announced, her son would have to go to prison. In tears, the mother's calloused, trembling hands tried to hold tightly onto the strong hand of her guilty son, then choked up and said: "My son, try to reform well so you can come back to me..."

After considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, Quan received a sentence appropriate to his actions. The trial ended when Mrs. N. collapsed. The prison van gradually left the court yard, echoing behind her son's remorseful and remorseful apology...

According to the assessment of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, branch in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Nguyen Bao Minh Truong was slashed by Quan, causing 34% of vital injuries, and Mr. Lam Huu Nghi suffered 21%. From that, the Trial Council determined that Nguyen Hong Quan's actions constituted murder, thereby sentencing Quan to 10 years in prison for murder under Article 123 of the Penal Code.
