In the alluvial plain area of Thuong Tan Loc commune, Nam Dan district, on the afternoon of September 29, more than 50% of the rice fields, mainly corn and some squash fields with nearly 40 hectares were deeply submerged in floodwater. According to officials of the Thuong Tan Loc commune People's Committee, by 5 p.m. the same day, one hamlet in this locality was completely isolated. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, in Thien Tan hamlet, has 2 hectares of corn in the alluvial plain right next to the main road leading to the commune center, not far from the riverbank. Ms. Hoa said that although it is harvest time, the number of corn ears with full kernels has only reached about 70%. The remaining number is still young, some ears have not yet formed kernels. If the rain continues and the water level continues to rise, the only way to get rid of the young corn is to cut down the whole plant to feed the buffalo and cows. The deepest flooded areas were close to the riverbank, the water rose almost to people's heads, people had to use boats to salvage the corn ears still floating on the water surface, and cut the tops of the corn plants to feed the cattle. The corn stalks were taller than a man, but now more than half of them were submerged. About half of the ears of corn that were full and ready to be harvested were submerged in water. In a rush to escape the flood, people in hamlets of Thuong Tan Loc commune with corn fields on the alluvial plains along the Lam River mobilized all forces and family members to rush to harvest. In Thuong Tan Loc commune, after planting watermelon, squash, and luffa, most households plant corn. Small households plant 1-2 sao, large households plant up to 3 mau. The autumn-winter corn crop of Thuong Tan Loc commune is mainly waxy corn, grown in 4 hamlets with an area of over 10 hectares; sowing begins in early August and harvests around October 15-25. Mr. Hien's family in Thien Tan hamlet planted 3 hectares of corn and squash, investing 30 million VND. On the afternoon of September 29, all 3 hectares of corn were submerged in water. Not only were the corn fields of the people of Thuong Tan Loc flooded and collapsed, they were also damaged by worms and rats, causing great damage. Mr. Hien said that due to heavy rain, the river water rose and flooded the bushes, the habitat of rats, so they drifted ashore and attacked the crops. Currently, the corn is in the period when the corn kernels are full, and rats have damaged some fields by up to 50%. There were corn ears that rats ate all the kernels, including the young corn. Mr. Huu Hanh, Hop Tan hamlet has 8 sao of corn. Mr. Hanh said that his family's corn fields are currently young, with mostly immature corn and about 30% of them have been flooded, the rest are broken and damaged by rats. While households gathered to harvest corn to escape the flood, people took the opportunity to sell fresh corn and local glutinous corn varieties on the road to earn extra income. Corn fields that have not been heavily flooded, people are busy harvesting. Clip: Thu - Phuc
