Coffee recorded a slight increase

Agricultural product prices on March 16, 2025: Coffee and pepper both fell sharply

At the London exchange, at 5:00 a.m. on March 18, 2025, Robusta coffee prices reversed and increased compared to the previous session, with an increase of 67 - 77 USD/ton, currently fluctuating between 5,225 - 5,507 USD/ton. Of which, the contract price for May 2025 reached 5,474 USD/ton; the July 2025 term closed at 5,451 USD/ton; the September 2025 transaction price was 5,387 USD/ton, and the November 2025 contract recorded 5,292 USD/ton.

Similarly, the price of Arabica coffee on the New York floor in the early morning of March 18 also increased sharply, with an amplitude of 5.80 - 6.50 cents/lb, ranging from 350.95 - 386.45 cents/lb. After the closing of the trading session, the Brazilian Arabica coffee market showed a vibrant trend again with an increase ranging from 0.75 - 9.60 USD/ton, in the range of 451.50 - 476.00 USD/ton. Details of the terms are as follows: March 2025 trading price reached 474.90 USD/ton; May 2025 contract at 478.00 USD/ton; July 2025 term reached 473.90 USD/ton and September 2025 closed at 462.00 USD/ton.

Update on domestic coffee market developments at 5:00 a.m. this morning, March 18, 2025, the Central Highlands region returned to an upward trend after many previous downward adjustments, with an increase of 700 - 1,000 VND/kg, bringing the average purchase price to 132,800 VND/kg.

Specifically, the coffee price in Dak Lak is currently at 132,700 VND/kg; in Lam Dong it fluctuates around 131,000 VND/kg; Gia Lai recorded a price of 132,700 VND/kg, while Dak Nong reached 133,000 VND/kg.

Rising coffee prices have helped farmers make more money. But longtime growers are concerned about a repeat of 1994, when coffee prices hit an all-time high but were then hit by a supply crunch that sent prices plummeting for a long time.

Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, said the fluctuations were only temporary. Many farmers are still persistent in producing specialty coffee to maintain their brands, even though some areas have cut production.

Currently, Vietnam produces about 500 - 600 tons of specialty coffee certified by prestigious competitions each year, but this number is still much lower than the target of 5,000 tons set by the industry for the period up to 2025.

In addition, the specialty coffee production process also creates about 5,000 - 6,000 tons of high-quality coffee, although not up to specialty standards, but still has outstanding quality. This type of coffee is very popular in the market thanks to its good quality and reasonable price.

Despite significant market fluctuations, promoting sustainable production and adding value to coffee beans remains an important long-term direction.

Pepper recorded mixed adjustments

Updated domestic pepper prices at 5:00 a.m. on March 18, 2025, the market recorded slight increases and decreases between regions compared to the previous trading session. Currently, the average purchase price in key provinces reached 158,600 VND/kg.

On the contrary, pepper price in Binh Phuoc decreased slightly by 1,000 VND/kg, currently trading around 157,000 VND/kg - the lowest level in the country.

According to the International Pepper Association (IPC), world pepper prices at 5:00 a.m. on March 18, 2025 showed that the trading market was more active than the previous session, in which Indonesian pepper prices recorded a slight increase from 31 - 56 USD/ton, while other markets remained at high levels.

In Malaysia, the market remained stable, with ASTA black pepper prices remaining at $9,800/ton, while ASTA white pepper reached $12,300/ton.

Pepper prices in Brazil have fluctuated little and are still quite high, trading around 6,900 USD/ton.

Vietnam's pepper export market is stable with a slight upward trend. Specifically, the price of 500 g/l black pepper is at 7,000 USD/ton; 550 g/l is at 7,200 USD/ton; white pepper is currently trading at 10,000 USD/ton.

According to forecasts, Vietnam's pepper output in the 2024-2025 crop year could reach 172,000 tons, down 2% compared to the previous year and 47% lower than the 2018-2019 crop year. Meanwhile, consumption demand in the world market remains stable, creating momentum to help pepper prices increase in the coming time.

The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) assessed that this year continues to be a positive year for the pepper industry, due to a decrease in global supply while demand remains high.
