Three years ago, Mr. Nguyen Viet Hien (56 years old, Ha Long commune, Ha Trung district, Thanh Hoa province) cut down nearly 1 hectare of sugarcane to plant Taiwanese guava. He said that since changing crops, his income has been stable, bringing in a profit of more than 150 million VND per year for his family.
According to Mr. Hien, growing Taiwanese pear guava is not difficult and brings high and stable income, so in recent years, many people in the commune have switched from growing sugarcane and rice to growing guava.

"Guava trees bring 3-4 times higher productivity than sugarcane and rice. Before, my family only earned 20-30 million VND a year from growing sugarcane, but since growing guava, we earn more than 150 million VND a year. In the past few years, many people in the commune have switched to growing guava," Mr. Hien shared.
Next to Mr. Hien's family's guava garden, Mr. Mai Van Thang is busy harvesting guava to sell to traders.
Mr. Thang said that before growing pear guava, his family used to grow sugarcane and pineapple. In 2020, seeing that pear guava trees were growing locally, he boldly converted nearly 1 hectare of sugarcane to grow 1,700 Taiwanese pear guava trees.

The owner of the guava garden shared that growing pear guava is not too difficult but must ensure the technique. If you want the tree to flower and bear fruit on time, you must prune old branches, diseased branches, and branches that grow too thick to create ventilation for the guava tree to grow and photosynthesize. Only then will the fruiting rate be high.
According to Mr. Thang, the time from planting to bearing fruit is about one year for pear guava, and the harvest time is year-round. A pear guava tree will have a continuous harvest cycle of seven years before needing to be replanted. Currently, the price of pear guava is being sold on the market from 6,000 VND to 15,000 VND/kg, depending on the time.
Thanks to proper care and techniques, in 2022, Mr. Thang's family earned more than 200 million VND, four times higher than growing sugarcane.
Mr. Nguyen Van Le, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Long Commune, Ha Trung District, said that guava trees have been planted experimentally in this locality since 2018, with an area of 4-5 hectares.
Currently, the entire Ha Long commune has nearly 200 hectares of land growing Taiwanese guava, bringing in profits of about 50 billion VND to local farmers each year (Photo: Thanh Tung).
By 2020, realizing that the economic value of guava trees was much higher than that of rice cultivation, people in the commune switched to growing guava. Currently, the entire Ha Long commune has more than 200 hectares of land growing guava, with more than 500 households participating, on average 1 hectare of guava will bring a profit of 300 million VND to growers.
"Guava is the main crop in the locality at this time. In 2022 alone, the whole Ha Long commune earned a profit of about 50 billion VND from Taiwanese guava trees. In the coming time, we will consider switching to guava growing inefficient rice and sugarcane areas to ensure income for local people," Mr. Nguyen Van Le added.
