Using organic fertilizers, a trend chosen by many farmers

Instead of using chemical fertilizers, many farmers in the province have chosen to switch to using organic fertilizers. Thanks to that, the production land area has been improved, increasing fertility, helping to increase output and value of agricultural products, bringing high income to farmers.

Using organic fertilizers, a trend chosen by many farmers Strawberry acreage at Hoang Dat High-Tech Agricultural Service Cooperative (Hoang Hoa) grows well thanks to organic fertilizer.

Realizing the benefits of using organic fertilizers in agricultural production, from 2019 to present, the High-tech Agricultural Service Cooperative (CNC) of Hoang Dat commune (Hoang Hoa) has pioneered the use of organic fertilizers in the process of taking care of crops.

Mr. Le Ngoc Nam, director of this cooperative, said: On the current 2.6ha production area of the cooperative, 1ha is produced in greenhouses with crops such as Kim Hoang Hau melon and baby melon, cherry tomatoes. The remaining area is used to grow strawberries and squash according to VietGAP standards. The source of fertilizer for the entire crop area used by the cooperative is mainly organic fertilizer (95%), the rest is inorganic fertilizer. The source of organic fertilizer used is the by-products discharged during the production process, soaked and composted to create fertilizer. The cooperative also purchases from cattle farms in Nhu Thanh and Tho Xuan districts, with a quantity of 120 - 130 tons/year. Although there is a time for soaking and composting at the farms, when buying, the cooperative continues to compost for another 1 to 2 months. The soaking and incubation process, using additional ECOM products, not only helps treat fungi and diseases, but also creates beneficial microorganisms, helping plants absorb nutrients well and not get fungi and diseases.

According to Mr. Nam, since using organic fertilizer, the entire production land area of the cooperative has always been loose, ensuring fertility, very favorable for cultivation. In particular, productivity and product quality have also increased, bringing profits to the cooperative of 300 - 400 million VND/year.

Previously, the 7 sao of rice land of Mr. Pham Van Thach's family in Quang Phu commune (Tho Xuan) was completely used with chemical fertilizers, so the rice was often affected by pests and diseases, and fell over, especially during the crop season. Since 2020, he has boldly used more organic fertilizers, so the rice yield has increased from 2.8 quintals/sao to 3.2 - 3.5 quintals/sao, even reaching 3.8 quintals/sao in some crops. Mr. Thach said: "In the 2020 crop, I boldly used more organic fertilizer for 1 sao of rice at the time of tillering. Only 1 time of top dressing the rice with organic fertilizer and 1 time of basal fertilization with inorganic fertilizer (nitrogen fertilizer) when the rice first took root, my family's rice area in the first crop achieved a much higher yield than previous crops from 30 - 50 kg/sao. From this efficiency, up to now, my family's 7 sao of rice have used organic fertilizer."

Fertilizer is an important material in agricultural production. However, many farmers in the province, for convenience, have abused and used inorganic fertilizers (chemical fertilizers), ignoring the available organic fertilizers from livestock and by-products in cultivation. Long-term abuse has been reducing productivity, product quality and, more dangerously, causing erosion and pollution, greatly affecting agricultural land. Realizing this danger, many farmers in the province have recently become familiar with and used organic fertilizers in the production process, but the area is not large.

To achieve the goal of using 300,000 tons or more of organic fertilizer in Thanh Hoa's agricultural production by 2030, equivalent to about 300,000 hectares of cultivated land fertilized with organic fertilizer at least once a year, Mr. Vu Quang Trung, Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Thanh Hoa province, said: "The Department has developed a plan to develop the production and use of organic fertilizers in the province by 2025. Accordingly, in addition to promoting propaganda on the production and use of organic fertilizers, opening training courses and providing knowledge on the use of organic fertilizers, the Department will build 6 demonstration models of organic fertilizers, with an area of nearly 90 hectares, with crops such as rice, vegetables, fruit trees, sugarcane, cassava and sedge. The total cost of implementing the models is more than 1,567 billion VND".

According to statistics from the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, many enterprises in the province have participated in the production of organic fertilizers, such as: Lam Son Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, Tien Nong Agricultural Industry Joint Stock Company, Phuc Thinh Fertilizer Joint Stock Company... with the amount of organic fertilizer produced and supplied reaching about 40 thousand tons.
