Hanoi farmers protect the environment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions

On March 25, in Ba Vi district, the Hanoi Farmers' Association held a workshop to summarize the project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions".

At the workshop, delegates enthusiastically discussed topics such as: "Some results of organizing and implementing the Waste Treatment Project in Ba Vi district from 2022 to present"; "Dong Anh farmers turn agricultural waste into valuable resources, protecting the green - clean - beautiful environment"; "Organizing and implementing the Project to propagate and mobilize farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions"...

According to a survey by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association, the situation of farmers burning straw after harvest is still happening in many places, emitting a large amount of air pollutants. In response to this situation, the project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions" has been implemented by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association in 15 provinces and cities.

The project aims to promote, mobilize, guide and support farmer members and people to implement solutions to protect the environment and handle agricultural waste, such as turning straw and crop by-products into valuable resources that both protect the environment and reduce costs in farming and livestock raising, increasing people's income.

Simple and easy-to-do solutions include: composting straw into animal feed for cattle and organic fertilizer for plants; using straw as thick biological bedding in raising chickens; and also instructing farmers to raise calcium worms and earthworms to treat livestock manure and as supplementary feed for livestock.

Chairman of Hanoi Farmers' Association Pham Hai Hoa said: to implement the project, every year Hanoi Farmers' Association directs all levels of Association to carry out many effective and practical activities, build many models of environmental protection, handle organic waste, contribute to changing behavior, living in a friendly environment, ensuring a bright - green - clean - beautiful environment.

These include practical and effective initiatives and models for rural waste treatment: pig and chicken farming models on biological bedding, contributing to reducing environmental pollution from livestock waste; waste collection, classification and treatment model at source to make organic fertilizer for crops; Pesticide-free Field model; Organic waste and manure treatment model using vermiculture and calcium worm farming; Straw-free Field model, Golden Straw model...

Along with that, the Hanoi Farmers' Association at all levels has actively promoted and mobilized farmer members to organize and implement with many forms of rich and diverse content associated with the annual working theme: "Digital Farmers - Clean Agriculture - Green Environment" and the emulation movement of bright - green - clean - beautiful of the city.

The project has organized propaganda and training for nearly 1,000 cadres and farmer members on 5 project techniques; built 135 models of fermenting crop by-products; 90 models of raising chickens with biological litter; 126 models of treating rice straw in the fields; 180 models of raising calcium worms and earthworms in 3 districts of Dong Anh, Gia Lam and Ba Vi.

The models have created positive effects and spread to many households, contributing to the implementation of environmental criteria in the construction of advanced new rural areas and model new rural areas in localities; creating consensus and enthusiastic emulation spirit of cadres and farmer members in environmental protection work; keeping the Capital Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful.

In order for the above models to become increasingly effective and become a widespread emulation movement in the community, Ms. Pham Hai Hoa suggested that the City Farmers' Association at all levels continue to promote propaganda, mobilization, and education to raise awareness, responsibility, and create consensus among officials and farmer members in participating in environmental protection; instruct farmers to comply with the principles of agricultural production, maintain the order of collecting, classifying and treating waste; use new energy, clean energy, renewable energy, etc.
