Provinces with nearly equal areas but GRDP 'worlds apart'

Bac Ninh is the province with the smallest area but its GRDP scale is in the top 10 of the country, higher than the economic scale of the province with the largest area in the country, Nghe An.

The level of economic concentration in a few key regions has led to a large difference in economic scale (GRDP) regardless of the area size between provinces and cities.

Therefore, there are provinces with small or very small areas, mainly in the plains, that have more advantages for economic development , while mountainous localities have large areas but very modest GRDP scale.

The province has the smallest area in the country in terms of GRDP in the Top 10

Statistics from Tuoi Tre Online show that there are three localities with an area of ​​less than 1,000km2 , but have a GRDP at a fairly good level. Including Bac Ninh with an area of ​​822.7km2 ; Ha Nam: 862km2 ; Hung Yen: 930km2 .

In this group, Bac Ninh is the province with the smallest area in the country, but has the largest economic scale (GRDP) with 232,000 billion VND; followed by Hung Yen with 159,844 billion VND; Ha Nam has a GRDP scale of 56,116 billion VND.

From the level of over 1,000 to under 2,000km2 , there are provinces and cities including: Vinh Long; Hau Giang; Can Tho; Ba Ria - Vung Tau; Vinh Phuc; Thai Binh; Ninh Binh; Nam Dinh; Hai Phong; Hai Duong; Da Nang.

Among these localities, there are three centrally-governed cities. Of which, Hai Phong has the largest GRDP scale with 445,995 billion VND; followed by Da Nang with 151,307 billion VND and Can Tho with 133,064 billion VND.

Notably, Ba Ria - Vung Tau - the capital of oil and gas production and processing projects and energy, is holding a GRDP scale of up to 417,306 billion VND.

In addition, the provinces in the Red River Delta have quite small areas such as Vinh Phuc, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh... but have quite impressive GRDP scale.

Of which, Hai Duong rose to 212,386 billion VND, Vinh Phuc to 173,140 billion VND, Nam Dinh to 113,329 billion VND, Ninh Binh to 98,900 billion VND.

However, with the same area, the Mekong Delta provinces such as Vinh Long and Hau Giang have quite modest GRDP scale, both not exceeding 100,000 billion VND.

The group of localities with an area from over 2,000km2 to under 5,000km2 includes: Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, Hanoi, Quang Tri, Hue, Ninh Thuan, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh, An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, Long An, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh.

The two centrally-governed cities, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, have the highest GRDP in the country, at VND1.78 trillion and VND1.43 trillion, respectively. Next is Binh Duong province, currently ranked third in the list of the richest provinces in the country with VND520,205 billion.

Many small provinces generate a lot of GRDP.

For the remaining provinces, the ranking gap is quite large and varies between regions. Although the area is quite similar, the GRDP value created per km2 in each locality is different.

In which, the group with GRDP at a fairly good level reaching over 100,000 billion VND includes: Bac Giang with 207,000 billion VND, Long An with 168,108 billion VND, Thai Nguyen with 162,500 billion VND, Phu Tho with 107,300 billion VND.

Along with that, the provinces of Tay Ninh, An Giang, Dong Thap, and Tien Giang fluctuated between over 120,000 billion VND and under 140,000 billion VND.

Localities with GRDP scale reaching less than 100,000 billion VND include: Hoa Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Ninh Thuan, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh.

There are some localities with GRDP scale below 20,000 billion VND such as Bac Kan.

From over 5,000 - under 10,000km2 there are the following provinces: Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Binh Thuan, Kon Tum, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Ca Mau, Kien Giang.

Topping the list of wealth of the above local groups is Dong Nai with 493,819 billion VND; Quang Ninh with 347,500 billion VND.

Localities with a total economic scale exceeding 100,000 billion VND include: Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Binh Thuan, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc, Kien Giang, Ha Tinh...

Localities with GRDP scale under 100,000 billion VND include Lao Cai, Quang Binh, Dak Nong, and Ca Mau.

Notably, in this group, there are localities with quite large areas but GRDP achieved below 50,000 billion VND. These provinces are mainly located in the Northern midlands and mountainous areas and the Central Highlands - where the terrain is covered with mountains, limited infrastructure and difficulties in transportation and trade.

Including: Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Kon Tum, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Lang Son.

Provinces with an area of ​​over 10,000km2 include: Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Quang Nam, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Son La.

In this group, Thanh Hoa is the leading locality in terms of wealth with a GRDP of 318,752 billion VND, Nghe An is 216,943 billion VND, Dak Lak is 141,362 billion VND, Quang Nam is 129,000 billion VND. At the bottom of this list is Gia Lai with 111,208 billion VND and Son La is 76,626 billion VND.
