Tu Nghia District (Quang Ngai Province) has the largest area of chrysanthemums grown during Tet in the Central region. Chrysanthemums are grown in Song Ve town, Nghia Hiep commune, Nghia My. In which, Nghia Hiep commune is the largest flower village with an age of more than 50 years.
In 2022, Nghia Hiep flower village was granted a certificate of recognition for the collective trademark "Hoa Nghia Hiep" by the Department of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology).
Nghia Hiep commune has more than 500 households growing chrysanthemums. Small households grow 400-500 pots, many grow up to 1,500 pots of various sizes. In the photo is a chrysanthemum garden of 1,000 pots of a household in Nghia Hiep commune.
The 2024 Tet Giap Thin chrysanthemum crop was planted from the end of the 7th lunar month. The chrysanthemum seeds in Nghia Hiep were purchased from Da Lat city.
Mr. Vo Tan Duy is the owner of a nursery with 500,000 chrysanthemum seedlings. In addition to proactively providing seeds for his family, Mr. Duy also supplies them to people in the commune.
Chrysanthemum seedlings are grown in sand in a shady place. After about 7-10 days of growing, the plants can be planted in pots. "The seedlings bought when they are still very small cost 1,300 VND. They are taken care of until they grow bigger and then sold for 3,000 VND each," Duy shared.
Nghia Hiep people often grow chrysanthemums in pots with diameters from 50cm to 1m. A 50cm pot can grow about 22 seedlings, a 1m pot can grow 75-80 plants.
Seedlings are planted in pots of soil mixed with fertilizer. The newly planted pots are watered and covered with straw to protect them from the sun for 3-5 days.
The time to care for chrysanthemums lasts nearly 5 months. During this time, farmers have to "eat and sleep" with the chrysanthemums in order to have beautiful flower pots to sell for Tet.
For about 4 months, the chrysanthemum garden is illuminated at night with yellow lights. The lighting stimulates the continuous growth of the plants, the stems grow taller, and the flowering time is controlled. The yellow lights also help keep the flowers warm in winter.
Nghia Hiep flower village is located near the river, and is often affected by floods every year. Chrysanthemums that are submerged in water and covered with mud will grow slowly or die. Therefore, farmers have to raise their flower pots higher.
Last year, the price of chrysanthemums was quite high, all chrysanthemums in Nghia Hiep were purchased by traders very early. Therefore, this year, people planted more in the hope that the market would be bustling.
This year, Mr. Le Van Le planted 500 pots of chrysanthemums. According to Mr. Le, the cost for a 60cm diameter flower pot is about 100,000-120,000 thousand VND. Of which, the cost of pesticides is the most expensive.
"If the Tet flower market is favorable, each pot of chrysanthemum will bring a profit of 30-40%. The Tet chrysanthemum growing profession has been associated with the people here for decades. Thanks to it, people have a prosperous Tet," Mr. Le shared.
Each year, flower growing brings about 30 billion VND to farmers in Nghia Hiep. Thanks to that, the life of people in the flower village is quite prosperous.
According to Ms. Vo Thi Thinh, Chairwoman of Nghia Hiep Commune People's Committee, in addition to the Tet flower crop, the locality is aiming for a chrysanthemum growing model to make tea. To achieve this, the local government has proposed to higher authorities to provide more technical support, funding for investing in greenhouses, and irrigation systems for the people.
