DNVN - On March 10, 2025, the live hog market nationwide unexpectedly had no price adjustment after many days of fluctuations, remaining in the range of 75,000 - 83,000 VND/kg.

Northern pig price

Pig price on March 8, 2025: Can it reach 84,000 VND/kg?

On the morning of March 10, the Northern region recorded unchanged live pig prices, continuing to fluctuate between 76,000 - 78,000 VND/kg.

In provinces such as Hanoi, Bac Giang, Nam Dinh, Thai Nguyen and Thai Binh, traders purchased at the highest price in the region, reaching 78,000 VND/kg. The remaining localities had prices ranging from 76,000 - 77,000 VND/kg.

Pig price in Central Highlands

In the Central Highlands region, the price of live pigs continues to remain stable, ranging from 75,000 - 82,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Khanh Hoa continue to be the localities with the lowest prices in the region, remaining at 75,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, Thanh Hoa, Hue, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai traded slightly higher, at 76,000 VND/kg.

Southern pig price

The live hog market in the South has not recorded any fluctuations compared to last weekend, currently fluctuating between 80,000 - 83,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, the lowest price in the region is 80,000 VND/kg, recorded in the provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Vinh Long, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Ca Mau, Tien Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre and Soc Trang. Meanwhile, Dong Nai is the only locality with the highest price in the country, reaching 83,000 VND/kg.

According to experts in the livestock industry, the price of live pigs today remains high due to limited supply and rising production costs. Factors such as African swine fever, animal feed prices and pork import controls are strongly affecting the market. It is forecasted that in the coming time, the price of live pigs may continue to remain high.

In Can Tho, one of the localities with a strong pig farming industry in the West, the supply of piglets is seriously scarce. Farm owners said that African swine fever in late 2024 caused great losses to the sow herd, causing a sharp decrease in the supply of pork.

Mr. Phan The Tuong, owner of a pig farm chain with a scale of nearly 5,000 pigs per year in Can Tho City, shared that the current price of pigs has reached 80 million VND/ton, an increase of more than 10% compared to last month and about 30% higher than the average of many previous years. However, despite the record price of pigs, Mr. Tuong still cannot benefit due to the lack of supply to sell.

“The current pig price is only about VND10 million/ton lower than the historical peak in mid-2020, and if we had pigs to sell, we could make a profit of VND27 million/ton. However, we currently have no pigs to sell,” Mr. Tuong shared.

Many farm owners in the West are in a similar situation. They regret not being able to take advantage of the sharp increase in pig prices because piglets are still scarce and difficult to buy.

Mr. Truyen, a farm owner in Mo Cay Nam district (Ben Tre), said: “I really want to restore my herd but I can’t. The price of breeding pigs is now at 2.5-2.7 million VND/head, about 1 million VND higher than last year, but in reality there are no products to buy.”

His family used to own 200 breeding sows, providing both breeding stock for their farm and about 4,000 breeding pigs to the market each year. However, after the African swine fever epidemic, his farm was severely affected and forced to temporarily suspend operations.

“We estimate that about 90% of our sows were lost in the previous outbreak, so piglets are very scarce,” Mr. Truyen added.

Despite investing in an automated feed production system, Mr. Truyen still faces many difficulties as the farm lacks breeding pigs, while the current farming system is under high depreciation pressure. Other farm owners in the West are also facing great challenges as pig prices fluctuate sharply, while the epidemic continues to affect supply.

In the 2019-2020 period, the price of live pigs reached its peak, but by mid-2023, the price had dropped to about 50 million VND/ton, causing many farmers to break even or suffer losses. In 2024, African swine fever broke out again, causing the livestock industry in the West to stagnate. Currently, when the price of pigs has increased sharply, many farm owners do not have pigs to sell, leading to great regret.

Despite the gloomy general market, some farmers were lucky enough to keep their pigs and earn large profits by selling them at the right time when prices were high. Mr. Le Van Muot, owner of a farm in Mo Cay Nam district, is one of the few who made large profits. Recently, Mr. Muot sold 500 pigs, bringing in an average profit of 2.7 million VND/pig.

According to information from the Ben Tre Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, due to the impact of African swine fever and strict environmental regulations in animal husbandry, the province's total pig herd has decreased significantly compared to before.
