Kaspersky’s Cybersecurity Summit in Sri Lanka revealed emerging attack techniques in the region and presented optimal security practices to cope with the new landscape – where artificial intelligence (AI) is deeply integrated into every aspect of life.
Kaspersky, a global cybersecurity solutions provider, hosted its annual Cybersecurity Week for Asia Pacific 2024 in Sri Lanka. The event delved into the latest developments in cybersecurity, potential threats in the region, and best practices to address current security challenges.
At the event, ransomware was identified as continuing to be a top threat. Furthermore, when ransomware is combined with AI, bad actors can make cyber attacks more complex and sophisticated.
The conference highlighted the growing role of AI in cyberattacks, with AI increasing the sophistication of social engineering attacks by creating more realistic fake emails and sophisticated phishing content. AI is also being used to generate strong passwords, develop malware, and carry out password attacks. The advent of AI also means that an emerging threat is adversarial attacks, in which cybercriminals make small changes to files to fool AI systems into misclassifying malware as safe files. To enhance detection and security, Kaspersky simulated adversarial attacks on its own malware detection models.
“At Kaspersky, we have spent years researching cybersecurity issues to develop reliable protection solutions for our customers,” said Alexey Antonov, Chief Data Scientist at Kaspersky. Kaspersky also leverages AI to detect malicious attacks and emerging threats. With the number of new malware samples emerging every day, the use of AI is essential. In 2024, Kaspersky detected 411,000 unique malware samples per day, up from 403,000 per day in 2023.
To cope with increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks, organizations need to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, including cyber disaster recovery plans, training personnel on common cyber attack methods such as phishing, applying optimal security measures and staying updated on the latest threats, through cooperation with trusted cybersecurity partners. This helps businesses and organizations ensure a comprehensive and proactive defense system.
Adrian Hia, Managing Director of Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, stressed that cybersecurity vendors and service providers need to align their cybersecurity strategies with the regulatory frameworks in their respective regions. “Integrating AI into organizations’ operations is an inevitable trend to take advantage of AI’s ability to process large amounts of data. However, stakeholders need to pay attention to data privacy regulations, especially when combined with the use of AI. Organizations need to develop specific policies on how to handle confidential data and clearly define what data can be accessed by AI, while ensuring full compliance with legal regulations,” Adrian shared.
