Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection not only causes certain cancers, but also significantly increases the risk of heart disease.
This is the result of a study recently announced at the American Heart Association Conference in Chicago.
Analyzing data from seven studies that followed nearly 250,000 people for 17 years, scientists found that HPV-positive patients were 40% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease as HPV-negative cardiovascular patients.
Therefore, the researchers recommend that doctors may consider closer cardiac monitoring for people who test positive for HPV.
The reason for the link between HPV and heart disease is unclear, but it is likely related to chronic inflammation, said Dr. Stephen Akinfenwa, lead researcher at the UConn School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut.
Researchers say they are looking at whether reducing HPV through vaccination can help reduce cardiovascular risk.
According to medical experts, there are about 100 types of HPV that affect different parts of the body. About 40 types of HPV can cause genital diseases, of which 14 strains are considered “high risk” for leading to cervical cancer.
According to statistics in the US, each year about 36,000 women and men are suspected of having cancer caused by HPV infection./.
