Mr. Ca Thanh Minh, Tan An Village Farmers' Association, a long-time resident of the village, recalled that Tan An was originally a new land, where Thai people who migrated from the northern mountains in the 50s of the last century chose to live. In Tan Van commune, Lam Ha district, people live around villages such as Tan Duc and Tan An. Tan An has barren land and many hills. In the past, people lived by growing coffee, so the economy was very difficult. But no matter how difficult it was, Tan An people still worked enthusiastically, accumulated economic resources, and united to build a new countryside.
Ms. Luong Nu Hoai Thanh - President of Tan Van Commune Farmers' Association, assessed that Tan An village is a village where residents have a very good spirit of cooperation. In 2017, when silkworms revived in Lam Ha land, Tan An residents learned silkworm farming and immediately, they taught and encouraged each other to raise silkworms. Kinh households are ready to grow mulberry and raise silkworms and are ready to provide technical guidance, share mulberry varieties, and encourage neighboring Thai households. Gradually, every house in the village has mulberry. The village is very small, with only 150 households, more than half of them grow mulberry and raise silkworms. And most notably, they proactively gathered and established the Tan An silkworm farming cooperative with 60 members and an area of 30 hectares of mulberry.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoang Phuc Cuong - Lo Thi Tan, a Thai ethnic couple, have been members of the cooperative since its inception. The couple are both hardworking and united, so they have built a prosperous family economy, raising their children to a good education thanks to the mulberry fields and white silkworm nests. Ms. Tan shared that from mulberry varieties, silkworm raising techniques, silkworm house cleaning techniques, and silkworm medicine, the siblings have guided each other very carefully and shared enthusiastically. Wherever the villagers go, they learn and observe what is good in the silkworm industry, then come back and try to apply it, and share it with the villagers. For example, using a net to bring the ripe silkworms to the nest, in the area, only the Tan An villagers currently apply it, which is also a technique applied from the fishing net weaving and flower growing net weaving profession, which is popular among the Thai community in Lam Ha.
And in particular, Tan An people pay great attention to the environment, Ms. Luong Nu Hoai Thanh assessed. As a village that has met the new rural standards, Tan An people pay attention to preserving and protecting the living environment and agricultural cultivation environment. Tan An is a village where people proactively apply the use of agricultural waste, soaked and composted with trichoderma microorganisms. Mulberry branches and silkworm manure after the end of the crop are ground and composted with lime and yeast. After a few months, they have a batch of loose, nutritious organic fertilizer to fertilize the mulberry garden. The cooperative also guides members to make biological pesticides from native leafy plants such as galangal, chili, garlic, orange peel, pineapple peel, etc. Every week, water from the compost tank is extracted and sprayed on the mulberry area to prevent the development of many pests and diseases, reduce the use of pesticides, and reduce costs for farmers.
For silkworm houses, people also remind each other to clean up well, not to leave garbage scattered around the yard, around the house, creating habitat for harmful creatures. Indeed, going around the village, it is rare to see plastic bags and garbage of all kinds scattered on the village roads. Mr. Ca Thanh Minh shared: “Doing agriculture, especially growing mulberry and raising silkworms, we must maintain a good environment because silkworms are very sensitive, just a little carelessness can lose the whole batch of silkworms. Silkworms bring a prosperous life to Tan An people, Tan An people maintain a clean environment for silkworms to grow quickly”.
Although the agricultural land area is quite small, thanks to effective mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising, the income of Tan An people in recent years has not been bad. Silkworms are raised as a pillow, only needing 2 sao of mulberry, each month a family can earn 15 - 20 million VND, enough to cover living expenses as well as send their children to school. With improved living conditions, Tan An people pay more attention to their spiritual and cultural life. On holidays, Tet, the brilliant xua com (shirt), xinh (skirt), xai en (belt) ... of Thai women are present throughout the village. Traditional dishes such as khau lam (com lam), cay pinh (grilled chicken), and traditional five-color sticky rice are made and invited to the whole village, so that people can enjoy the rich culinary treasure of the Black Thai and White Thai people. Festivals such as the Great Unity Day of Ethnic Groups, Independence Day ... are all big festivals for Tan An people, with brilliant colors amidst the green of the highland.
