Hair beautification such as hair dyeing and gray hair removal is a legitimate need of women, especially middle-aged women. However, the abuse of this type of beauty drug has many potential health risks.

To warn about the risk of hair dye abuse, a urologist at Gengshin Hospital (China) shared the case of a 60-year-old female patient diagnosed with bladder cancer . It is known that this person has been dyeing her hair continuously since she was 20 years old to beautify herself. The doctor said that the female patient's 40-year hair dyeing habit could be one of the causes of cancer.

Explaining this, he said that hair dye is mostly water-soluble, can dissolve in blood, after being metabolized by the kidneys, it will dissolve in urine, over time will affect bladder health. The difficulty in detecting and diagnosing bladder cancer is that compared to many other cancers that can be detected through blood tests, bladder cancer cannot do so, so when signs of blood in urine are detected, the disease may be in the late stage.

Additionally, some studies have also shown that hair dye increases the risk of lymphoma and breast cancer and other cancers.

In fact, the harmful effects of hair dye on each person are completely different. Moreover, nowadays hair dye has been improved a lot and is less toxic, but anyway, these are still chemicals that contain substances that affect health.

Experts recommend that before you want to dye your hair, carefully consider the harmful effects that dyes can cause.

Damage to scalp and hair

The chemicals in the dye will dehydrate the hair as well as cause the hair to peel off the cortex, eroding the nutrients that nourish the hair, thereby making the hair dry, weak and often broken. In addition, the evaporating dye can cause red eyes, sneezing, runny nose. For people with sensitive skin, the dye can cause peeling, itching, stinging... even sores and scalp.

Endocrine effects

Some hair dyes contain alkylphenol ethoxylate (APE), a chemical commonly used as a bleaching agent in the textile wet-processing industry. Hair dyes contain this chemical to create a more beautiful color, but this chemical can be absorbed into the body and cause endocrine disruption.

Effects on the fetus

Pregnant women or women preparing to become pregnant who dye their hair have a 10 times greater risk of developing cancer in their fetuses than women who do not dye their hair. Therefore, when preparing to become pregnant or during pregnancy, absolutely do not use hair dye.

Effects on bones and joints

According to the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, people who often dye their hair often have to deal with joint pain, mainly pain in small and medium joints such as the joints of the hands, elbows, knees, and ankles. The cause is that hair dye contains paraphenylenediamine (PPD).

Women who dye their hair regularly for 20 years or more are twice as likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis as those who don't dye their hair, according to a new study by Swedish scientists.

- Pay attention to the notes or ingredients on the packaging. Read the instructions carefully and follow the instructions for use in the hair dye package.

- Do not dye your hair too often. The time between each dyeing should be 6 months. For those who have premature gray hair and need to cover it, they can wear a thin wig. This method solves the problem of covering gray hair, does not require using many chemicals to cover gray hair and is also cheap.

- Choose hair dyes from reputable brands (or ones you are familiar with). Do not mix different types of hair dyes together as this will increase the risk of damage to your hair and scalp.

- After dyeing your hair, rinse it with cold or cool water. Do not use hot water to avoid further damage and hair loss. Limit blow-drying, ironing, and heating your hair.

- You should condition your hair once a week. Choose a shampoo that contains moisturizing ingredients for your skin and hair; only use conditioner on the ends of your hair.

- When going outside, wear a hat and a sun-protective shirt that covers your hair to protect your scalp and hair from the sun.

Who should not dye their hair?

- People with allergies such as hives, atopic dermatitis, asthma, eczema, food allergies, drugs... need to be very careful when using hair dye.

- People allergic to hair dye.

- People with acne, dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis or skin damage.

- Immunocompromised people and patients with various diseases in the recovery phase.
