A new generation drug, CagriSema, has recently been tested and has the potential to bring significant weight loss effects to overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes.
On March 10, Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk announced promising results from a phase III clinical trial called REDEFINE 2, showing that the new generation drug CagriSema has the potential to bring significant weight loss effects to overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes.
After nearly 70 weeks of treatment, trial participants lost an average of 15.7% of their body weight.
The REDEFINE 2 trial was conducted in approximately 1,200 patients with type 2 diabetes with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or higher.
One notable point is that the trial was designed to be flexible, allowing patients to adjust their dosage according to their body's response. This demonstrates the personalization of the treatment regimen, an important factor in optimizing effectiveness.
After 68 weeks of testing, nearly 62% of patients reached the highest dose of CagriSema, indicating good tolerability of the drug.
Compared to the placebo group which lost only 3.1% of its weight, the 15.7% loss in the CagriSema group was a marked difference.
This result is particularly important, because previously, another trial on non-diabetic people showed that the weight loss effect of CagriSema was lower than expected.
This new data strengthens confidence in the potential of CagriSema as an effective future treatment for obesity.
CagriSema is a weekly injection that combines two active ingredients: semaglutide (found in the Wegovy injection) and cagrilintide. Semaglutide mimics the hormone GLP-1, which helps reduce appetite, while cagrilintide mimics the hormone amylin, which helps control blood sugar.
This combination provides a dual effect, helping to lose weight while improving blood sugar control for diabetic patients.
