Mr. Zhou (now in his 40s) from Jiangsu Province, China, married Ms. Li in 2007. They have two children together, a boy and a girl.
The couple divorced in 2013 but later remarried. They went through many arguments, tensions and then made up.
However, due to personal conflicts, the two separated again in 2022. Mr. Zhou said that there was no serious problem between the two, it was just that both of them had stubborn personalities and acted impulsively, leading to many times of breaking up and then making up.
A few months ago, Mr. Zhou expressed his desire to reconcile with his wife. Ms. Li joked that if he cycled from Nanjing to Chengguan, where she lived, she might consider a reconciliation.
Ms. Li did not expect that Mr. Zhou was determined to do as she said. Despite her best efforts to dissuade him, he was still determined to complete the trip to prove his love.
He started cycling from Nanjing on July 28. After more than 100 days, he arrived in Chengguan, more than 4,000km away from where he started, on October 28. There, the couple held a small ceremony to mark their reunion.
During the journey, he had two significant incidents. The first incident occurred when he reached Anhui Province, where he suffered heatstroke and was hospitalized. The second, more serious incident occurred in Yichang, Hubei Province, where he again suffered heatstroke in 40-degree heat and dehydration.
Now that Ms. Li has returned to Jiangsu, Mr. Zhou is planning his next cycling trip to Nepal and Europe.
The couple's story went viral on social media and received much criticism.
Some people think they are irresponsible towards their children, while others think that the marriage is not sustainable if both are too conservative and do not know how to give in.
Some netizens even commented on why Zhou had to try to make up with his wife, then leave her at home to prepare for a new journey. It seemed that cycling was his hobby, not a way to prove his love.
