At the time of admission, the patient was slow to regain consciousness, very tired, thin, pale skin, yellow sclera, hand tremors, severe sore throat, painful swallowing, coughing, expectoration of little red blood-tinged sputum. ENT endoscopy showed: Right piriform sinus tumor (monitoring: Carcinoma), the patient was referred to a higher level for treatment.
Doctor Mai Thi Hanh - Department of Internal Medicine said: For this patient, the exact cause of the tumor in the piriform sinus has not been determined, but alcohol may be a factor related to this disease.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO): Drinking alcohol (Ethanol) is classified as a substance that causes 7 types of cancer such as: oral cancer, throat cancer, laryngeal cancer, liver cancer, esophageal cancer; colorectal cancer and breast cancer in women.
The reason given by WHO is: When drinking alcohol, 95% of alcohol is metabolized through the liver into new compounds. Under the effect of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, alcohol is oxidized into acetaldehyde, which attacks DNA and causes cancer cells to proliferate.
In addition, the more alcohol you drink, the more acetaldehyde in your saliva will increase, contributing to DNA damage in the cells lining your mouth, throat, esophagus and respiratory tract. Therefore, people who abuse alcohol for many years have a higher risk of cancer than normal people.
