In the first days of the Year of the Dragon 2024, Hon Ro fishing port, Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), Sa Ky fishing port (Binh Chau commune, Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province), Tinh Ky port (Tinh Ky commune, Quang Ngai city, Quang Ngai province) are bustling again when every day dozens of offshore fishing boats arrive with full holds of shrimp and fish. These early spring "sea luck" trips mark a smooth start for fishermen in coastal areas.

Khanh Hoa fishermen: each trip catches 2-8 tons of various types of fish

From February 1 to February 19, 2024, Hon Ro fishing port recorded 60 fishing vessels departing and 68 vessels entering the port to unload fish. Most of these vessels are offshore fishing vessels, including fishing trawlers, purse seine vessels, drag nets, and cast nets. The fishing grounds are large, especially for ocean tuna fishing, stretching from the Truong Sa sea area to the Southwest sea area. The average output of trawlers is about 6-8 tons of various types of fish, while fishing vessels reach 1.6-2 tons of ocean tuna after each trip. This year, due to favorable weather and hydrometeorological conditions in recent months, along with an increasing trend in seafood consumption, fishermen have been very active in exploitation.

Currently, Khanh Hoa province has nearly 3,200 boats and ships of all kinds, of which more than 665 are qualified for offshore fishing (71% for tuna fishing). This is a significant force contributing to protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands and developing the local marine economy.

Mr. Nguyen Bien Xuan Tram, 40 years old (Vinh Truong ward, Nha Trang city), owner of fishing boat KH 95427 TS, is working with the crew to rearrange the fishing net system, preparing for the sea trip this afternoon. He shared: The boat has 10 crew members working, qualified for offshore fishing, but in the first few days of the new year, the crew mainly stays near the shore, this season the weather is relatively favorable, the amount of fish caught per day is quite regular, around 1 ton/day, mainly small and medium fish, the most is striped melon fish from 1-1.5kg/fish, just enough to supply the wholesale market in Vinh Truong ward.

According to data from the Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, in January 2024, the total seafood output of the province reached nearly 8,200 tons, an increase of 1.9% over the same period last year. This growth was partly due to favorable weather. On the other hand, during the Lunar New Year, the demand for seafood consumption increased, so many fishermen actively went offshore and stuck to the sea, thanks to which, the output of seafood exploited in the whole province increased compared to the same period last year. The encouraging growth signs in the first days of the new year signal a favorable year for Khanh Hoa fishermen, contributing to the sustainable development of the marine economy.

Quang Ngai fishermen hit a jackpot with anchovies

At Sa Ky fishing port (Binh Chau commune, Binh Son district), Tinh Ky port (Tinh Ky commune, Quang Ngai city, Quang Ngai province), most boats have a bumper harvest due to encountering many anchovy streams.

According to fishermen in Tinh Ky, at around 4pm, anchovy fishing boats will start their engines and head out to sea about 12-15 nautical miles from shore. On average, after one night, each boat catches 7-10 tons of anchovies, with some boats catching nearly 20 tons. With prices ranging from 10,000 VND - 20,000 VND/kg, depending on the quality of the fish, each boat earns from several tens of millions to hundreds of millions of VND.

Fisherman Truong Thanh An (residing in Tinh Ky commune) said that after a night at sea, he and 5 other crew members caught 8 tons of anchovies. With the current fish price, after deducting expenses, each crew member gets 3-4 million VND. "However, anchovy fishing is very hard work, because fishermen have to work all night, but in return, the profits are high, so fishermen are very excited," said Mr. An. Or fisherman Truong Dinh Thanh - owner of fishing boat QNg 96299 TS - hit a good catch of anchovies while fishing about 2 nautical miles from Ly Son island. His boat caught 17 tons of anchovies, selling them for nearly 200 million VND.

Most of the anchovies after being caught will be purchased by local and foreign fish steaming facilities to make dried anchovies. On average, each worker here earns from 100,000 to 300,000 VND per day.
