MP Craig Mackinlay to a standing ovation from colleagues

Craig Mackinlay returned to parliament for the first time since his quadruple amputation. The British MP's return was warmly welcomed by his colleagues, including House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Mackinlay an inspiration.

MP Mackinlay said he wanted to be the first "bionic MP" when referring to his prosthetic limb.

"Today is a very emotional day for me," Mr Mackinlay said, even joking that because his prosthetic limbs forced him to break the dress code in the British parliament, as he can only wear sneakers and cannot wear a suit jacket.

Sepsis is a condition where the immune system overreacts to an infection and the body starts to destroy its own organs. The UK Sepsis Foundation estimates that one person dies every hour in the UK from the condition.

MP Mackinlay said he went to bed feeling unwell on the night of 27 September 2023. Within a day, his body had turned pale. He spent 16 days in a coma, and when he woke up, he found his limbs were black and bruised.

All of his limbs were amputated in an effort to save his life last December.

After being fitted with a prosthetic limb, he learned to walk again, although he admits he still faces many difficulties in daily life.

MP Mackinlay has announced that he will stand for re-election. The UK election is expected to take place in the second half of this year.
