Baby naming profession

American Steph Coffield, 40 years old, became a professional namer when the demand for parents to find cool, unique names increased.

"They want to choose a name that's special because it's going to be the child's TikTok or Instagram account in the future," says Steph Coffield.

Steph Coffield is a mother of three living in Minneapolis. She has gained a lot of attention online with her TikTok channel Names With Steph, which has more than 267,000 followers.

“I got so many requests that I had to start charging for it,” she said.

Steph Coffield says modern media and technology play a big role in creating unique, personalized names. She gets paid $500 for each successful name she helps parents name their baby.

Coffield suggested using popular social media usernames like Ferris, Keaton, and Townsend for boys. For girls, Coffield suggested Birdena, Doretta, and Velma.

She said popular names from previous generations like John and Marry are making a comeback, but the trend in 2024 is for names ending in ie for both boys and girls. Americans are also seeing a trend toward giving girls masculine names.

“People are choosing Barrett for boys,” Coffield explains. “For girls, I’m seeing more masculine names, not just Logan and James anymore, but Denver and Murphy.”

Usually, people want to name their baby boy according to tradition such as the family name or third generation.

For girls, our society puts less emphasis on them, so parents seem to be more relaxed about choosing names. "You can choose whatever name you like," she says.

However, Coffield is an advocate for gender-neutral names and even published a book in 2022 that does the same.
