According to the Korea Herald on March 5, a Korean woman in her 60s accidentally threw 26 million won (more than 660 million VND) into the automatic garbage disposal system of her apartment building. This was the money she had saved to cover the cost of her son's surgery.
With the help of local authorities and sanitation workers over the course of eight hours, she found the lost money.
The incident began at around 10am on February 24 (local time), when civil servant Kang Hyun Kyu in Sejong City received an emergency call from a woman asking for help finding 26 million won that had been mistakenly dropped into the apartment building's automatic garbage disposal system.
In South Korea, residential areas use the system like a vacuum cleaner, automatically transporting trash through underground pipes to a central waste treatment plant.
Upon receiving the news, Mr. Kang immediately ordered the garbage treatment process to stop and the woman immediately went to the central garbage treatment station.
However, upon arriving, she was almost in despair when she saw a giant container with 24 tons of waste that had been torn from its bag and mixed together.
Just when she was about to give up, the sanitation workers decided to help after hearing her story. They did not hesitate to roll up their sleeves, turn over the pile of trash, and meticulously check every piece of paper and plastic bag.
After searching for a while, a worker happily discovered a 50,000 won bill, followed by several 10,000 won bills. Finding a ray of hope, they became even more determined to search.
After eight hours of searching, they finally found a total of 18.28 million won (about 460 million VND). The rest may have been lost or damaged beyond recovery.
Despite working hard all day, the sanitation workers did not ask for any compensation and refused to accept any reward. On the contrary, they even apologized for not being able to find all the money for her.
Touched by their kindness, the woman shared on the Sejong City website: "I felt hopeless when I saw that huge pile of trash. But the workers did not give up. They carefully picked up each note. When they returned the money they found to me, I was so touched and grateful that I burst into tears."
