(To Quoc) - On the morning of March 6, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) organized a national scientific conference on "Current situation and solutions to preserve and promote the values of traditional Vietnamese art in the context of market economic development and international integration". Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism chaired the conference.

Traditional art demonstrates the richness of national cultural heritage.

The workshop attracted a large number of managers, scientists, artists and artisans to participate.

Vietnamese traditional arts are extremely rich and diverse, including many types: theater, music, dance, fine arts. Each type has many different genres such as theater has tuong, cheo, cai luong, puppetry; dance has folk dance, royal dance, religious dance; music has ca tru, hat xoan, bai choi, quan ho, nha nhac, hat van, xam…; fine arts have folk wood carvings, village communal house carvings, round statue carvings, architectural decoration, glass painting… The above richness and diversity demonstrate the richness of the cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people, which has been formed, developed, and passed down over thousands of years of history.

Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong and Director of the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong chaired the Workshop.

Presenting the opening report of the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, affirmed that Vietnamese traditional art contains the quintessence of national culture, reflecting the creative intelligence of the Vietnamese people. In the history of the nation, traditional art has always played an important role in the process of building and developing the country, inseparable from the cause of "Culture illuminating the way for the nation to go".

In the context of the current market economy, traditional art, as a commodity product, is welcomed by the public and brings a significant source of income to the national economy. In addition, traditional art is part of the third source of cultural soft power - cultural heritage (along with national identity and institutions).

In his opening speech at the workshop, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong said that with its important role, the preservation and promotion of traditional art values in particular and traditional culture in general is a major and consistent policy of the Party and State of Vietnam, mentioned in many important documents. Thanks to those correct orientations, the preservation and promotion of traditional Vietnamese art values have achieved many successes, contributing significantly to the sustainable development of the country.

However, nowadays, under the negative impact of the market mechanism, traditional art is facing the trend of "commercialization", for the purpose of profit, facing the situation of fading, deformation, disappearance... Besides, international integration leads to the risk of losing national cultural identity, national culture - endogenous is "dissolved" into exogenous culture. Therefore, preserving and promoting the value of traditional art is becoming an increasingly prominent issue, needing attention.

Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong delivered the opening speech at the Workshop.

Furthermore, the practice of preserving and promoting the values of traditional Vietnamese art still has many limitations and shortcomings: lack of quality human resources; the role and potential of traditional art in contributing to the development of the country have not been fully promoted; the organization and implementation of policies and viewpoints on preserving and promoting the values of traditional art in some fields and localities are still limited; policies and mechanisms are still inadequate, investment is not commensurate with the requirements of preserving and promoting the values of traditional art; the public who understands and loves traditional art is increasingly sparse....

In order to both develop the country's economy and open the door to integration with the world while still preserving the cultural identity - the national soul, the National Scientific Conference "Current situation and solutions to preserve and promote the value of traditional Vietnamese art in the context of market economic development and international integration" creates a forum for exchange, discussion, and consultation of managers, experts, researchers, artists, artisans... on related issues.

Overview of the Workshop

Synchronize conservation and promotion solutions

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Hung, Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism, shared solutions to preserve and promote artistic values in the community and exploit intangible cultural heritage in relics.

Doctor, People's Artist Le Tuan Cuong, Director of the Vietnam Cheo Theatre, proposed preserving traditional plays; preserving in theaters and professional performing arts units; enhancing human resource training; increasing investment in staging quality works and promoting tourism and introducing products...

Master Tran Van Hieu, Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism, proposed the application of digital technology as useful suggestions to store, record and teach traditional art. At the same time, technology is also a tool to promote and develop the value of traditional art in modern life, bringing traditional art closer to the public, especially the young generation...

Many authors have proposed solutions related to building and perfecting the policy system; raising community awareness; diversifying performance spaces; minimizing socio-economic impacts on conservation activities; providing adequate incentives for artists and artisans; integrating conservation with local socio-economic development programs; supporting the search for performance venues, etc.

Regarding policies, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Thu said that: current policies still have many shortcomings such as the lack of investment policies, attention to public development of traditional arts; lack of proper conservation orientation; inequality still exists; the regime and policies for treating artisans, artists and the young are still limited; the merger helps to make the apparatus compact and reduce staff, but causes traditional performing arts to fade away; the policy of autonomy, implementing cultural industries in the market mechanism causes conservation work to be neglected and heritage values to be destroyed... These shortcomings require State policies to be adjusted and supplemented to suit reality.

Regarding human resources, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung said that the shortage of human resources is one of the reasons why traditional art forms cannot maintain their inherent position in social life. Currently, the training of human resources in the field of traditional art nationwide is shrinking in scale and decreasing in quality. Many industries and majors cannot recruit students. In such a difficult context, recruiting, training and retaining young artists is facing many difficulties. The story of creating a source of successors for traditional art in contemporary society has always been a difficult problem for artists as well as managers.

Concluding the workshop, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong said that the negative impacts of the market mechanism and international integration have made traditional arts more vulnerable, eroded, distorted, and disappeared... along with the risk of losing the extremely profound national cultural identity.

"The presentations and discussions at the Workshop raised important scientific issues on the current status and solutions for preserving and promoting traditional artistic values in the context of market economic development and international integration today. These research achievements make practical contributions to interdisciplinary research and to the practice of protecting and promoting intangible cultural heritage in Vietnam" - Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong emphasized./.
