Losing 0-1 at Newcastle, Arsenal missed the chance to take the top spot. The "Gunners" are still in 3rd place with 24 points and could completely fall out of the Top 4 if Liverpool and Aston Villa both win. Newcastle rose to 6th place with 20 points.
Playing away at St. James' Park, Arsenal faced a big challenge against the strong play of the home team. Newcastle players had a little less possession than Arsenal but they did not let their opponents pressure them. Even though Newcastle had fewer shots, their scoring chances were brighter than Arsenal's.
Arsenal's most notable moment in the first half did not come from a goal-scoring opportunity but from Havertz's vicious tackle on a Newcastle player, fortunately he was only shown a yellow card by the referee. After a lackluster first half, Arsenal tried to push their attack in the second half.
Newcastle became more dangerous with counter-attacks. In the 64th minute, goalkeeper Raya failed to block the opponent's cross, the ball fell to Joelinton who was rushing in and fell right on the goal line, Gordon easily kicked the ball to open the score.
After conceding the goal, Arsenal tried to fight back but they could not penetrate the well-organized defense of the home team. Arsenal players often had to shoot from unfavorable positions so the ability to threaten the opponent's goal was not high.
Arsenal protested the goal because they believed Joelinton had pushed Gabriel while engaging in a challenge. VAR determined that the Brazilian striker had not committed a foul and the goal was awarded to the home team.
Unable to score, Arsenal bitterly accepted a 0-1 defeat away from home. This was the first defeat of the "Gunners" this season. Arsenal's first 10 matches had a record of 7 wins and 3 draws.
