(Dan Tri) - Merino's goal helped Arsenal win 1-0 against Chelsea in the match that took place on the evening of March 16. Arteta's team shortened the gap with Liverpool to 12 points after round 29 of the Premier League.
Arsenal ended a three-game winless run in the Premier League with a narrow win over Chelsea, while the defeat extended the Blues' away winless run to seven (D2 L5).
Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli put Chelsea under pressure from the start, with the visitors struggling to control the game. Arsenal used the right wing well, with Jurrien Timber's back pass from the byline causing panic for Chelsea. Unsurprisingly, the opening goal came from the right, with Martin Odegaard taking a corner, allowing Mikel Merino to head past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in the 20th minute.
Merino headed the goal for Arsenal.
Chelsea striker Pedro Neto was often isolated, but his side improved as the first half wore on. Chelsea almost equalised when Marc Cucurella's volley bounced off David Raya and hit the outside of the post. Arsenal held on, however, and went 1-0 up at half-time, taking their lead at the Emirates to the highest total in the league.
Without the injured Cole Palmer, Chelsea started the second half quietly and struggled to maintain their momentum. With the hour mark, Sanchez made a superb save to deny Merino's volley. Odegaard also tried his luck but failed. Despite their efforts to equalise, Chelsea were unable to break down Arsenal's solid defence.
With this victory, Arsenal closed the gap of 12 points with the leader Liverpool, creating more space in the race for a Champions League ticket (currently 10 points ahead of Man City). Chelsea still held the 4th position, but they are still only 2 points ahead of 7th place Brighton.
