(CLO) On Friday, the US proposed a draft resolution to the United Nations on solutions to end the conflict that is about to mark the 3-year milestone between Russia and Ukraine (February 24), in parallel with another draft proposed by Ukraine and the European Union (EU).
The short three-paragraph US draft resolution expressed regret for the loss of life in the "Russia-Ukraine conflict" and reiterated "the primary purposes of the United Nations are to maintain international peace and security and the peaceful settlement of disputes".
The text also "calls for a swift end to the conflict and the promotion of a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia".

Russia proposed an amendment aimed at "a rapid end to the conflict, including addressing its root causes, and urging a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia".
Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia described the US draft as a "step in the right direction". A Russian diplomat said that if the Russian amendment was adopted by the General Assembly, Moscow would vote in favour of the US resolution.
Mr Nebenzia said he was informed by the United States before the draft was sent to the 193-member General Assembly.
The UN General Assembly is also scheduled to meet on Monday to vote on another text drafted by Ukraine and the European Union, which calls for de-escalation, an early cessation of hostilities and a peaceful settlement in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
Ukraine and the EU have been negotiating with UN member states over the past month. General Assembly resolutions are non-binding but carry political weight, reflecting global views on the war. No country has a veto in the General Assembly.
The Ukraine and EU text "reiterates the urgent need to end the war this year and redouble diplomatic efforts to reduce the risk of further escalation and achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine".
The Ukrainian and EU text affirms the need to implement previous UN resolutions demanding that Russia withdraw its troops from the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine and demand that Moscow cease hostilities.
The General Assembly adopted six resolutions on the Russia-Ukraine conflict in its first year, demanding a full withdrawal of Russian troops. A resolution in October 2022, condemning Russia's annexation of four regions in Ukraine, won the most support, with 143 countries voting in favor.
