NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that Russia could be capable of launching another military attack on Europe by 2030. Speaking in Warsaw, he stressed that anyone who "miscalculates" and attacks Poland or another NATO ally would face "the full force of the alliance".
He asserted that NATO's response would be "devastating", aimed at deterring any potential war.
The warning came just hours after Russia launched a missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, with Mr Rutte stressing that Russia must understand the consequences of continuing with such actions.
Crisis Management and Preparedness Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said the threat to Europe is now more complex than ever. According to Mr Rutte, Russia is "moving to a war economy", which could help it significantly increase its military capabilities in the coming years.
At the same time, the Russian military announced that it had launched cruise missiles from the Ufa attack submarine in the Sea of Japan. Russian state media claimed that the missiles hit a land target more than 1,000 kilometers away in the Khabarovsk region, as well as a target at sea.
