The river goes into the song

I don’t know how many rivers I have visited and each river leaves a nostalgic scent in the joyful seasons welcoming the sun. Each river has its own beauty, with its everlasting vitality, carving its beauty into the flow of time. Inspired by the river, artists have distilled it into songs.

In each of those songs, each river resonates with many beautiful images. The Red River, red with alluvium, has carried many aspirations, and there are many songs: “Sending you at the end of the Red River” by Duong Soai, music by Thuan Yen; “Immense 1st part of the Red River” by Pho Duc Phuong; “Improvisation of the Red River” by Tran Tien; Do Nhuan wrote about the Thao River - a part of the Red River flowing through Phu Tho with the song “Du Kich Song Thao”…

Regarding the Lo River, Van Cao has “The Lo River Epic” which is considered an immortal work with a tone that is both heroic and smooth and romantic. Or the song “Lo River in the last afternoon of the year” by Minh Quang. The Ma River in particular and the heroic land of Thanh Hoa in general, have always been the subject of special attention of many famous musicians. Musician Xuan Giao composed the song “Hello Heroic Ma River”.

The song is a heroic song, full of pride about a river with the children of the homeland who steadfastly fought against the enemy: "The shadow of Ham Rong bridge stands tall/ Reflecting the immense Ma River/ Oh my beloved homeland/ The river water echoes with the heroic songs". Also inspired by the Ma River, musician Phan Lac Hoa has "Love song of the Ma River", musician Huy Thuc has "Come back according to the Ma River's folk song", musician Bui Duc Hanh has "Love song of the Northwest"...

The Perfume River is one of the rivers with the most poetry and music. Among them are “On the Perfume River”, “Binh - Tri - Thien Khoi Lua” by Nguyen Van Thuong; “Tieng Song Huong” by Pham Dinh Chuong; “Tieng Hat Gui Song Huong” by Tran Huu Phap…

The Vam Co Dong River is associated with many famous songs, in addition to the song “Vam Co Dong” by Truong Quang Luc, set to Hoai Vu’s poem, there are also “Len Ngan” by Hoang Viet, “Anh o dau song, em cuoi song” (music by Phan Huynh Dieu, set to Hoai Vu’s poem), “Dong song va tieng hat” by Nguyen Nam, “Anh lai ve ben song Vam Co” by Luu Cau, “Vam Co thuong nho” by Duy Ho…

The song “Vam Co Dong” speaks of the hearts of the children of the Southeast region, steadfast in their resistance against French colonialism and then against American imperialism: “Here is Vam Co Dong, here is Vam Co Dong/ We are determined to keep each boat, each net, each beam/ Each person makes history/ And the river is cool all year round…”.

Poet Do Anh Vu shared: “Life with all its troubles just flows on and the rivers still flow tirelessly and persistently. Poetry and music talk about rivers, but in fact they also talk about human destiny, the destiny of the nation with many historical ups and downs. Returning to the rivers will sometimes be a precious spiritual medicine, washing away all our sorrows.

The river will bring us back to the peaceful clarity with many dreams of a childhood. Because “In everyone’s heart there is a river of their own/ My heart is always attached to the river of my childhood/ The river I bathed in, the river I sang/ The river gave me a deep love for my homeland/ The river is like that person, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes jealous, only childhood love can see/ Oh paper boats, where have the years of childhood gone, leaving me alone to miss them now (Return to the river of my childhood - music and lyrics: Hoang Hiep).

Emotions where rivers flow into Vietnam

Among the thousands of rivers, there are rivers from foreign countries flowing into Vietnam. The Da River is a fierce river, long ago becoming a “river of energy”.

Where the Da River flows into Vietnam at milestone 18 (2), in Ka Lang commune (Muong Te district, Lai Chau province), nature has created a picturesque landscape. Nearly 300 kilometers from the center of Lai Chau province, it takes nearly 2 days to reach Keng Mo. To get here, you have to cross misty mountains, pass cloudy passes, cross roads that cross cliffs, and roads that wind under the canopy of old forests.

Along the route from Thu Lum, Ka Lang, Pac Ma, Ta Ba down the Da River in Muong Te, there are now many villages of the La Hu people, one of the few ethnic groups that have been revived thanks to the joint efforts and contributions of people from all over the country. Since 2009, the Border Guard has begun the revival of the La Hu people by calling for funds to establish villages, build houses of gratitude, go to the forest to persuade the La Hu people to leave their shacks and return to their villages, and teach them to grow rice and raise livestock.

The place where the Red River flows into Vietnam is also special. That is Lung Po village, A Mu Sung commune (Bat Xat, Lao Cai). Not only because it is the place where poet Duong Soai wrote the song "Gui em o cuoi song Hong" for musician Thuan Yen to put to music, which has been deeply ingrained in the subconscious of music lovers for many years, but also because this is the river that has brought great spiritual and material values.

Lung Po, in the local language, means dragon's head. From here, Lung Po stream joins the Red River to form a beautiful river junction. The Red River is also known as the Mother River. From Lung Po dragon's head, the river seems to be sprayed from the dragon's mouth, so that for generations the water has been flowing passionately like a lyrical song, depositing alluvium for fragrant rice on the fields, flowers blooming on the hills, and for crops in the delta. Before 2008, to get to Lung Po, one had to go through many arduous stages because the road was difficult to travel. Now the road is easier, attracting a large number of tourists, especially backpackers.

Mr. Ma Seo Pao - who has worked hard with his family members to improve the land, plant trees, create crops, and create vitality for Lung Po. Now corn, cassava, rice, mango, sugarcane, banana, cinnamon, jackfruit... have contributed to making life in the border area more prosperous.

Mr. Pao confided: “We, the people, together with the Border Guard, protect border security, do not practice illegal religions, and fulfill all tasks assigned by the Party and the State. From a wasteland, Lung Po has become the first new rural village in A Mu Sung commune.”

The Ma River has become a legend in poetry, in the process of conquering the harsh nature of the people of the western region of Thanh. The “backpackers” still believe that the Ma River is a river with a playful and romantic character. Also because the river has its main source in the wild mountainous area of Tuan Giao district (Dien Bien), winding under the forest canopy of Song Ma district (Son La).

The river refused to flow still, but instead turned to Laos, "married" with the Nam Et and Nam Kan rivers of Laos, and then returned to Vietnam in Ten Tan commune (Muong Lat district, Thanh Hoa). On the Ma River, countless stories, both real and supernatural, have been passed down from generation to generation.

People in Muong Lat district still tell each other the story of a mother who worked as a raft boatman and lost her child. She searched for her child through many flower seasons, until her hair turned white but she still couldn’t find him. One day, in her old age, she leaned against a rock by the river and that place turned into a rapid. The Ma River is fierce, with many rapids and waterfalls, but it still brings water to nourish the bamboo forest and the people where it passes.

Many rivers still flow to the Motherland every day. At the border of the Fatherland, at the upper reaches of the river, spring blooms, life is beautiful, crops are green. There are soldiers who consider "the station as home, the border as homeland" firmly protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Vietnam. They are the ones who contribute to shaping the country, so that along with the flows, life is always filled with songs.
