Tens of thousands of farming households in Dak Nong are celebrating with farmers in the Central Highlands provinces when in the first months of 2025, coffee and pepper prices are quite high.
Pepper production decreased but price was high
At this time, Dak Nong farmers are focusing on harvesting pepper. Most people are excited because pepper prices are high.
This has motivated people to continue investing in and taking care of pepper gardens, improving product quality.
The family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Le Ha, village 7, Dak Ha commune, Dak Glong district is harvesting over 10 hectares of pepper. Along with regular workers, she has to hire 10 seasonal workers to harvest the pepper fields on time.
Ms. Ha said that this year her family is quite excited about harvesting pepper because the price of pepper is high. With the price fluctuating above 140,000 VND/kg of pepper like in recent months, pepper growers have high profits.
Mrs. Ha is happier because her family grows pepper according to strict global good agriculture standards, so the selling price is always better.
At current prices, the family's pepper selling price can reach 170,000 VND/kg.
The family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Le Ha, village 7, Dak Ha commune, Dak Glong district (Dak Nong) is harvesting over 10 hectares of pepper.
However, Ms. Ha also said that compared to the 2023-2024 harvest, her family's pepper crop this year will have a yield loss of about 1/3 due to the great impact of climate change.
Specifically, during the flowering and fruiting stage, the pepper plants encountered unseasonal rain and wind, resulting in little fruit set. Ms. Ha estimated that the total yield of the pepper garden was only about 15 tons.
At this time, Mr. Nguyen Van Minh's family, village 1, Truong Xuan commune, Dak Song district is harvesting 1.5 hectares of pepper. Mr. Minh said that this year, his family's pepper garden has a yield of about 2 tons/ha, lower than previous years.
Mr. Minh said: “The productivity of the garden is not high, but in return, the price has increased, so my wife and I are very excited. I have capital to invest in fertilizer and take better care of the pepper plants so they can grow well,” said Mr. Minh.
High pepper prices bring joy to Dak Nong people
According to the reporter, the general psychology of pepper farmers in the 2025 pepper harvest is excited and happy because the selling price has increased. However, the productivity of the gardens of some areas has decreased due to the impact of the weather.
Statistics from the agricultural sector show that in recent years, the pepper growing area in Dak Nong has grown steadily at 34,000 hectares. The average yield of the whole province is about 2.4 tons/ha, with a total annual output of about 70,000 tons.
Pepper plants develop on the right trajectory associated with certification standards and value chains, which is a new step forward for Dak Nong's agricultural economy, and has helped position the Dak Nong and Vietnamese pepper brand in the international market.
According to Mr. Ngo Xuan Dong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the agricultural sector continues to implement solutions to promote sustainable pepper development, standard pepper cultivation, organic pepper, and linkage. In particular, the agricultural sector focuses on two main factors, which are improving quality and developing linkages in the sustainable pepper value chain.
Nguyen Thi Le Ha's family, village 7, Dak Ha commune, Dak Glong district (Dak Nong) will lose about 1/3 of pepper output in 2025.
Dak Nong encourages the development of pepper production according to good agricultural practices (GAP) towards biological and organic production, limiting the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Producers and traders apply pepper cultivation techniques suitable to ecological conditions and post-harvest processing and processing, promoting geographical indications of Dak Nong pepper products...
Farmers welcome a happy season
Not only pepper, Dak Nong farmers are having a happy season because coffee prices have remained at a record high in recent years.
Dak Nong farmers are excited when prices are quite high in the first months of the year.
Ms. Truong Thi Hanh, in Nghia Trung Ward, Gia Nghia City happily shared that before the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025, her family harvested nearly 2 tons of coffee beans. All the coffee was dried and stored in the house.
“In recent days, coffee prices have increased and are usually at 125,000-130,000 VND/kg. At the current price, farmers like us are quite satisfied. I will sell a portion of the coffee at 130,000 VND/kg to cover my living expenses. I will divide the remaining coffee into batches until around September 2025. And I will only sell when the price is higher,” Ms. Hanh said excitedly.
Regarding pepper, Ms. Hanh said that her family is preparing to harvest pepper and is happy with the high price. She hopes that pepper prices will continue to increase during the peak harvest season and remain good throughout 2025.
Dak Nong farmers harvest coffee for the 2024-2025 crop year
Thinh Phat Agricultural - Medicinal Materials - Commercial Services Cooperative, Quang Son Commune, Dak Glong District has 201 members and associate members growing over 700 hectares of coffee and pepper.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Toan, Director of Thinh Phat Cooperative, shared that in the 2024-2025 coffee crop, many households' coffee yields showed a decrease compared to previous years due to drought and other impacts. However, favorable price fluctuations in the first months of the At Ty Spring are bringing joy to farmers.
“Some members sold coffee at VND120,000-128,000/kg. Some households sold at higher prices. Currently, cooperative members are harvesting pepper and showing that the estimated yield has decreased significantly due to the erratic climate. Pepper prices in recent days have been at VND150,000, peaking at VND158,000/kg, opening up good expectations for farmers for a good crop.”
Thinh Phat Cooperative, Quang Son Commune, Dak Glong District invests in machinery to improve the quality of post-harvest products.
In the first 10 days of February 2025, coffee prices in the Central Highlands fluctuated at 128,500 - 129,500 VND/kg, an increase of 500 - 700 VND/kg compared to the previous week.
The price of green coffee beans in the domestic market in the Central Highlands also reached a peak of VND131,000/kg. According to farmers' calculations, with the price in the first 10 days of February 2025, depending on the selling price, minus costs, they can make a profit of about VND70,000 - 90,000/kg.
According to forecasts from authorities, Vietnam's pepper output in 2025 will decrease by about 5-10% compared to 2024. Therefore, significant fluctuations in pepper prices in the first months of Spring At Ty 2025 are opening up expectations for farmers to increase economic profits as the new harvest season begins.
The increase in coffee and pepper prices is a condition and motivation for farmers to invest in improving productivity and quality of agricultural products.
“The price increases from coffee and pepper in 2024 and the first months of 2025 have increased economic benefits for farmers,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Toan, Director of Thinh Phat Cooperative.
Good news about coffee and pepper prices at the beginning of the new year of At Ty 2025 is creating excitement and motivation for farmers. Dak Nong farmers, along with farmers in the Central Highlands, are expecting a year of good prices for key crops, including coffee and pepper.
“Statistics from the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association show that in January 2025, Vietnam exported 154,635 tons of coffee, with an export turnover of 799.48 million USD. Of which, exported coffee beans reached 137,568 tons, with a turnover of 694.93 million USD, down 38.2% in volume but up 8.8% in turnover compared to the same period last year."
