Many Vietnamese industries are falling in rank.
ShanghaiRanking Consultancy (China) announced the 2024 World University Rankings by Academic Field on November 11. Vietnam has 9 representatives, down 3 schools compared to 2023. The universities and colleges in the rankings are all old names: Hanoi National University, Hanoi Medical University, Duy Tan University, Ton Duc Thang University, Thu Dau Mot University, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Ho Chi Minh City National University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics.
Specifically, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy ranked 55 majors in more than 1,900 schools out of 5,000 units from 96 countries and territories. These 55 majors are divided into 5 fields: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. Vietnam has a total of 19 majors ranked across 4 fields this year, most concentrated in the engineering group.
In which, Duy Tan University, Ho Chi Minh City National University and Ton Duc Thang University are familiar names in the field of engineering, while Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City Economics dominate the social sciences group. In the field of natural sciences, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University, Thu Dau Mot are the units named, while in the health sciences group, Duy Tan University and Hanoi Medical University, Nguyen Tat Thanh are present.
In terms of industry rankings, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics's finance surpassed more than 150 schools to rank 38th in the world, up 1 place compared to 2023. This achievement is higher than some famous global names such as Oxford (ranked 40), California in Los Angeles (42), Dartmouth, Singapore, Cambridge, Melbourne (in the same group 51-75)... It is known that the finance industry trained by the School of Business of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics has a benchmark score of 26.03 in 2024 based on the high school graduation exam score.
Also in this industry ranking, Hanoi National University holds the same position as in 2023, 151-200. Also in the world's top 200 are Hanoi Medical University's public health, Duy Tan University's science and equipment technology, Duy Tan and Ton Duc Thang's civil engineering, Duy Tan and Ton Duc Thang's water resources engineering, Duy Tan and Ton Duc Thang's mechanical engineering.
On the other hand, Business Administration of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is a Vietnamese major that has been introduced for the first time in the world rankings, in the 301-400 group.

However, the general trend of many industries in Vietnam is to drop in rank or even be eliminated from the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's rankings. For example, the mechanical engineering industry at Ton Duc Thang University and Duy Tan University, which used to be ranked 39th and 48th in the world, is now in the 101-150 and 151-200 groups. Meanwhile, hotel and tourism management (Duy Tan University), veterinary medicine (Vietnam University of Agriculture), atmospheric science (Ton Duc Thang University), human biological science (Hanoi Medical University)... have all been eliminated.
In total, 25 training majors of Vietnamese universities have dropped in rank compared to 2023 (a major can have many schools ranked). In addition, 15 training majors of universities have been eliminated from the 2024 ranking.
What is the ranking method?
According to ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the organization uses a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of universities in each field. In addition to the four old criteria groups including world-class output, high-quality research, research impact, international collaboration, this year the ranking added a criterion of world-class faculty.
Specifically, this group of criteria considers how many international academic award winners, highly cited researchers, editors-in-chief of scientific journals and leaders of major academic institutions a school has. To obtain the evaluation data, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy also conducted a survey of 1,543 professors from the world's top 100 universities. And in each subject, the ranking criteria will have their own weight, the announcement said.

In 2024, US universities topped 29 subject rankings, with Harvard the most prominent, topping 14 subjects. Following that, MIT (US) took the No. 1 spot four times and Tsinghua (China) took the top spot three times. In addition, Princeton, Chicago (US) and Oxford (UK) each had two world-leading fields. If we count the total number of appearances of all schools, the US appeared 4,277 times, followed by China (3,278 times), and the UK (1,560 times).
